Back on topic -- I paid $770 for my last flight to BKK a month ago (cool meeting you there, atl), on China Airlines. Albeit their screwed up miles transfer policy makes me start to look around for an alternate carrier.

Having lived in Los Angeles for a couple years, the flights are generally about $300 bucks cheaper from the west coast than from the east coast...mai loo, maybe distance 
However, my 2 flights from LA to BKK were roughly about the same time frame.....

Eva Deluxe Elite class is more expensive this year even though economy is less expensive. Used to be about a $350 difference in price. This year, I am finding economy at around $800 and Elite no less than $1400.

Air fares set to take off as fuel costs soar

Thai Airways International is increasing its domestic fares on April 1 and the operators of passenger boats and ferries in Bangkok will follow suit after the Songkran festival to cover higher fuel costs.
THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand yesterday said fares for THAI's domestic flights would rise on Thursday to cover higher fuel costs. The increments set by the Civil Aviation Board would fall within a range of up 13 baht a kilometre.
The highest increment of 2,920 baht would be on the Chiang Mai-Phuket route, while the lowest of 165 baht would be on the Bangkok-Surat Thani route.
"We decided to raise fares because operations on most domestic routes remain loss-ridden..."' Mr Piyasvasti said.
"The increments will not reach the ceiling except [on] the Samui route fare, which will rise to the ceiling of 13 baht a kilometre because the operator of Samui airport has raised the aircraft parking fee."
Fares will rise on the 566km Bangkok-Chiang Mai route by 740 baht from 2,185 to 2,925 baht, on the 678km Bangkok-Chiang Rai route by 815 baht from 2,840 to 3,655 baht, on the 387km Bangkok-Khon Kaen route by 580 baht from 1,955 to 2,535 baht, on the 457km Bangkok-Udon Thani route by 475 baht from 2,200 to 2,675 baht, and on the 483km Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani route by 575 baht from 2,295 to 2,870 baht.
Fares will increase on the 667km Bangkok-Krabi route by 725 baht from 2,860 to 3,585 baht, on the 696km Bangkok-Phuket route by 1,195 baht from 2,575 to 3,770 baht, on the 552km Bangkok-Surat Thai route by 165 baht from 2,670 to 2,835 baht, on the 489km Bangkok-Samui route by 1,895 baht from 2,975 to 4,870 baht, on the 770km Bangkok-Hat Yai route by 1,365 baht from 2,885 to 4,250 baht, and on the 1,263km Chiang Mai-Phuket route by 2,920 baht from 4,535 to 7,455 baht.
The fares exclude the fuel surcharge and insurance premium of 755 baht.
The airline will keep its international air fares unchanged.

Looking at it from the other side of the coin, on my last Thai Airways flight, I had this obnoxious guy sitting in front of me. He pressed the call button and when the flight attendant arrived, he just said red wine, no please and no thank you when it arrived. During a period of about 2 hours, he did the same thing again about 6 or 7 times. I was saying to myself...you arrogant, rude f***... you can't even be bothered to get your fat arse up from your seat, and get the wine yourself. This was in BC upper deck and in the part of the flight when most were asleep. So not only was he getting drunk, he was disturbing other passaengers trying to sleep with the dinggggg dongggg of the call button (similar to other areseholes who open the window to look outside when the cabin is dark - like what the f*** ate you going to see ??!!).
Anyway, back to the story. So this obnoxious, arrogant man is slowly getting drunk, but oblivious to his condition. He stumbles up to get his laptop from the overhead compartment, and then spends another 5 minutes trying to close it again !! He dinggg donggggs for another wine, and as usual the subservient, meek cabin crew serve it. I am not a party pooper by any means, but being in close proximity to a drunken man, in the close proximity of a plane, is not nice. He gets up to go to the toilet, tries to open the door for 5 minutes, and when he does manage it, he goes to the toilet with the door open !!! It is only because this is business class that nobody says anything.
If there was an emergency, this ape would have been a danger to other passengers.
It actually left me thinking why airlines have the right to stop excessive drinking and also that many of us don't realise how f***ing stupid we look and behave when under the influence.

Quackers, I've rung the call button twice
The first time when they missed me when handing out the meals. Waited paitently for ten minutes before ringing the bell, and got the accusing eye from the stewardess when I asked for a meal (A right  ) who thought I was trying to score a second meal for free (Qantas)
The second time when then they missed me when handing out the meals. Am I bloody invisible or something??  . The steward apologised and promptly got my meal (Thai)

I would agree. The people that get uncontrollably drunk (as so many expats in BKK do), are usually losers running away from themselves...

I like flying thai air from LAX because it is a direct flight. Also if you fly only fifty thousand miles in a year ( only two trips to Bangkok plus the mileage from new York to lax) you attain gold status which gives you one free biz class upgrade plus one " gift ". This year the gift is using half miles on a flight so I am going biz class again for only 85,000 miles !
I checked a few other airlines but the gold status requirements were all much more stringent. Does anyone else know of a better airline for upgrades or gold status levels ? Btw I always receive great service on thai.
Just booked for June 24 hope all is well in Bangkok by then... Can't wait

Fares are up this year, time to shop fares. Does anyone have an efficient means of determining the best time to go LAX-BKK this summer. I usually fly EVA but they are no hope over phone. The expedia type sites don't make it easy to seach out cheapest dates without plugging them in. Anyone have an easy to use site? I want to go for about 6 weeks and I can go starting anytime in May or June and come back anytime in June or July. I can't believe fares are really this high, #1, and trying to find the absolute least espensive dates.
