Arrived on Sept 1st around 11am.

breconion and IBFarang's comments still pretty much accurate.

Used EVA Evergreen Deluxe for the first time. Lots of seat and leg room, and your own movie screen. About as good as it gets in Economy class pricing. Nice thing was that we pulled into E4 gate instead of waiting for a bus to take us to the terminal. But, a good 10 minute walk to Immigration.

I scanned the lines and got into the shortest one, about 10 people in front of me. Line alternated between very slow and very quick - seems the immigration officer varied his checking of information.

The signs at immigration said to have your passport, arrival/departure card, boarding pass stub, and outbound flight information available. He asked me for my boarding pass stub but not for the outbound flight info. Might have been because I had a 60-day Thai visa, but not sure. I also (hopefully) didn't look like a backpacker. I asked but he didn't answer.

Baggage arrived just as I did, so no wait. Exited Baggage Claim (once again just walked through the nothing to declare line without anyone glancing at me) and out. It was very nice that all the touts have been moved back and there is a lot of space to exit.

Didn't use the taxis because I met my TGF. Hint: if you are meeting someone, have them meet you upstairs at Departures near "U". There are some seats there so they can sit while waiting for you, and it is right above where you exit Baggage Claim. Rarely crowded, either.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 4 September 2007 :-

Balloon launch 'would be act of terrorism'
===============================

The Department of Aviation has threatened to invoke the security law against people who attempt to disturb air traffic at Suvarnabhumi airport.

Prasong Thianthanu, the department's deputy director-general, said while a proposed balloon launch would not be against the air traffic law, it imposes security concerns which would make it an act of terrorism and thus illegal under the security law.

The threat is a fresh bid to deter residents living near the airport from launching balloons into the sky in protest against Airport of Thailand (AoT) 's failure to tackle noise problems. He said the department will ask its legal division to consider amending the air traffic law to cover this kind of air traffic disturbance.

What kind of morons would launch balloons in the air to 'deter' airplanes, or create a disturbance (as I'm sure their intentions are). I mean, what kind of idiots... oh, wait.... never mind.

The kind of idiots that get jacked around by the AoT about compensation for being in the flight path. I guess they didn't like the earplugs, and sleeping pills the AoT offered...........lol.

Nice current post RIT

Those moving sidewalks... didn't notice last time all the "Keep Left" signs.

Of course, the vast majority of the riders were either standing on the right, or trying to pass me on the left.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 5 September 2007 :-

Residents call off balloon protest
=========================

Residents of 32 housing estates affected by aircraft noise at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday called off their high-profile plan to launch balloons into aircraft flight paths after the airport operator agreed to consider their demands.

They earlier threatened to release balloons on Friday to disrupt air traffic if the Airports of Thailand (AoT) failed to come up with a concrete compensation offer and noise mitigation scheme.

Chaisawat Kittipornpaiboon, permanent secretary for transport, said the committee on compensation and residents' representatives reached a preliminary agreement at yesterday's meeting - the first since residents unveiled their planned action last Friday.

Mr Chaisawat said his committee will ask the AoT board to review its resolution on payments of compensation, as demanded by residents.

The homeowners asked the committee to follow the Nov 21, 2006 cabinet resolution under which more residents were entitled to higher compensation than under a new resolution on May 29 this year, which changed the rules.

Under the May 29 resolution, the number of households affected by noise higher than 70 decibels drops from 1,800 to only 773 as stated in the November 2006 resolution.

The number of those affected by noise levels between 60-70 decibels shrinks from 25,000 households to 18,253.

Mr Chaisawat said his committee also agreed to revise the compensation conditions for those affected by noise levels between 65 and 70 decibels from granting expenses for house modification to buying back the residents' houses, the same compensation condition for those affected by noise higher than 70 decibels.

Under the May 29 resolution, the AoT will only buy houses suffering from noise levels of over 75 decibels.

However, the committee must seek the AoT board's approval on the revision.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 7 September 2007 :-

Passengers may pay noise compensation
===============================

Airports of Thailand (AoT) is considering collecting a special fee from passengers and airlines using Suvarnabhumi airport to compensate residents affected by aircraft noise.

The AoT board, led by assistant army chief Saprang Kalayanamitr, yesterday discussed sources of funding for the compensation and came up with an idea used in Australia and Japan, where a special fee is collected from those who cause the noise pollution. Passengers and airline operators who use the airport would be charged the fee, said AoT board spokesman Chirmsak Pinthong.

The board has asked AoT to study details of the proposal and set a suitable rate before submitting its findings to the board before the end of next month. If approved, the proposal will be sent to the Transport Ministry, which will forward it for cabinet approval no later than November, he said.

''The proposed special fee is collected in several countries. This is a good thing as it will create a good moral sense. This is fair and better than using taxpayer money or AoT coffers [to compensate affected residents],'' he said.

He maintained that AoT was willing to help all affected residents. The authority would follow a cabinet resolution and the AoT board's resolution on compensation payments, he said.

Typical... AoT messes with the location and who pays? Those who will use the new airport.

Let AoT use part of the bribe money their officials got to compensate those affected by the noise!

Cheers!

Gents,
I have just started taking my girl to the airport for long goodbyes...I think I am going soft in the head, romantic. Anyway, I would like to spend a little time with her at the airport, maybe taking in a meal, after I check in my luggage.
Are there any restaurants, cafes before customs check-in?
Thanks,
Liam
