After taking a close look at the aerial photographs of the new airport it would apear to me that it has, approximately, the same number of gates as the current airport. It has two runways, the current airport has two runways.
How is any of this an improvement?
Of course, being closer to Pattaya is a benefit..........

Under the covers there is a lot of improvement in ATC, Cargo and Baggage handling, Immigration systems, and Backroom operations, they spent several million USD on the integraton software alone...

They probably have a master plan that allows for more runways. They may start building the additional runaways once the airport opens, or they may build them later, as needed.

I think the big drawback of Don Muang Airport is, that the arriving airplanes have to cross the runway 21 R/03L. In prospect to across this runway, the arrival airplane block the incoming airplanes of runway 21L/03R.
When I understand the new runway concept, is it not necessary more.

Good point. At the new airport the runways are on opposite sides of the terminal building.

Apparrently the new airport is for international flights and don muang will carry on with domestic flights.

I heard this, too. But this procedure is difficult to understand for me. About 1 to 1 1/2 hour far from the new airport, the thai gov want to dispatch the domestic flights ? All bullshit ! I dont make more domestic flights in TH, when that's the future.

But maybe a chance for our german TransRapid-Project. The modell of Shanghai an idea for Bangkok ? More informations here:

Great system that transrapid.

Maybe what will happen is major airlines will use the new airport for international flights and Thai air will use the new airport for international and conecting internal flights around Thailand when other smaller airlines will use the old airport for domestic travel or flights around Asia.
