Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 19 July 2006 :- BMA to sign B3.8bn skytrain deal ========================= The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will sign a 3.8 billion baht contract with Italian-Thai Development Plc (ITD) at City Hall today to extend the BTS skytrain system. Construction of the 5.25km elevated extension, including train stations and tracks, from Onnuj station along Sukhumvit road to Soi 107 will begin next month with the completion date expected some time in 2010. The BMA's traffic and transport director, Apirat Sivapornpitak, said ITD can move into construction sites on Sukhumvit road next month and start relocating public utility lines to pave the way for the construction of the structure. Mr Apirat expects the whole project to be completed over the next three-and-a-half years. The BMA will also hire a consultancy firm for 140 million baht to supervise construction, a contractor for 4.6 billion baht to install a signalling system, and second consultancy firm for 105 million baht to supervise installation. Total cost to the BMA for the project will be about 8.7 billion baht. It will have five stations, expected to be near Sukhumvit 83, Sukhumvit 97, Sukhumvit 101, Sukhumvit 103 and Sukhumvit 107. A BMA official said that Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin, a deputy leader of the Democrat party, previously planned to chair the contract signing ceremony at Onnuj station. He cancelled the plan to avoid accusations he was exploiting the event to attract votes in the Bangkok council elections this Sunday.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 19 July 2006 :- Skytrain to get smart ================ Millions of Skytrain riders in Bangkok will now be able to skip long queues with the introduction of a new "contactless" Smart Card, to be introduced shortly by Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTSC). Anat Arbhabhirama, an adviser to the BTSC board of directors, said the company planned to introduce new contactless smart-card tickets called the Smart Pass. Introduction of the Smart Pass is aimed at providing Skytrain passengers with more efficient and convenient service, while enabling future integrated ticketing with other transport systems, such as the subway and buses New Smart Pass gates will be equipped as follows: Smart card readers ------------------------ Card readers will be installed on the tops of gates. The reader acts as a card analyser and data recorder. Made of durable lightweight polycarbonate, the reader analyses the entry status of each passenger. A green light means the card is verified, while a red light means the card cannot be accepted, due to data loss or expired value. Passenger information display module ------------------------------------------------ The information display consists of a thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display screen, covered in a polycarbonate casing. The colour monitor is bright and displays the remaining value or number of trips on a card, including date of travel. Gate end display --------------------- The gate end display shows the status of an automatic gate, using red and green LED lights to indicate whether passengers are allowed to enter or exit through a particular gate. Gates displaying a green arrow will allow entry, whereas a red "x' indicates no entry. Electronic control unit --------------------------- Control units are installed inside the automatic gates. This device allows gates to support both magnetic cards (existing tickets) and the new contactless smart cards.

Public utilities between Sukhumvit Soi 85 and 107 will first be progressively relocated, with one outbound traffic lane to be closed from 10pm-5am during August and September. Deputy Bangkok governor Bannasopit Mekwichai had discussions on the route extension with related agencies on Friday including the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the contractor on how to ease the traffic problem when construction begins. Report from The Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 2 August 2006 :- Thai Cabinet gives nod for three subway lines : Funding to be sourced domestically, overseas ============================================================== The government yesterday gave three new mass transit subway lines the go-ahead with funding for them expected to be sourced both domestically and overseas. The cabinet approved in principle the construction method for the three subway lines. Relevant agencies have started working on the project preparations and discussing the technical aspects. The three lines were considered urgent as they would help ease traffic and save the travelling public time. They are the 40km Red Line from Phya Thai to Rangsit and Chiang Rak Noi; the 23km Purple Line from Bang Yai to Bang Sue; and the current subway route, the Blue Line. The subway now runs from Hua Lamphong to Bang Sue. It will be lengthened by 14km from Hua Lamphong to Bang Khae and by 13km from Bang Sue to Tha Phra. The Red Line will connect with the Airport Link train to Suvarnabhumi airport, which is now under construction. Mr Pongsak said the Finance Ministry would be responsible for arranging the loans, both local and foreign. Bidding panels from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) needed to speed up setting the bidding dates, he added. The SRT will be responsible for the Red Line, construction which will cost 42 billion baht. The MRTA, which runs the underground train now, will take charge of the expanded current route and the Purple Line. Some 103 billion baht is needed to build them.

Report from The Bangkok Post dated Thursday 2 November 2006 :- Skytrain fares to go up five baht on Dec 1, 2006 =================================== Skytrain fares will increase by five baht from Dec 1 onwards to absorb rising operations costs, Bangkok Mass Transit Corp (BTS) officials said yesterday. However, BTS executives insist the new fares will not affect long-distance passengers as the price ceiling of 40 baht will remain unchanged. Under the new rates, passengers will be charged 15 baht as a minimum fare and have to pay five baht more for every two stations they travel. But the maximum fare of 40-baht set by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will not be changed, said Anat Abhabirama, an adviser to BTS which runs the skytrain services. Mr Anat said the fare hikes were deemed necessary in the face of rising operations costs, but defended the increases saying it was the first time the company had raised its fares since the transit system was launched in 1999. The 23 kilometres of elevated rail runs from Taksin bridge to Mor Chit in northern Bangkok and to Onnuj in eastern Bangkok, serving an estimated 430,000 passengers a day. The company is also in the process of expanding the skytrain routes with a 2.2 kilometre extension from Taksin bridge to Taksin Intersection in Thonburi and a 5.25 kilometre extension from Onnuj to Sukhumvit Soi 107 (Soi Baring).
