Since they opened the extension to Bearing, the BTS has become a nightmare equal to that of Tokyo.

Anytime of day, it's packed and hardly a seat available. This will become even worse if the next extension will be opened. Because are not extended and frequency will be the same.

... as you, Dr. Love, I do not underestimate the Thai's ability to mismanage to failure any kind of first class anything they are handed by farang... the BTS/MRT could indeed easily fall into third-world cluster f*** that is di rigueur throughout most of Thailand... (for example, they are unlikely to even order additional train cars until the need is shrieking at them, and then it will be 12-18 months before they can be delivered... as what happened when the original Sukhumvit Line was opened... tracks and stations finished... but... no cars!).

... but..."[the BTS is a] nightmare equal to Tokyo"?.. I lived in Tokyo (2 years) and Bangkok (13 years) and rely upon rail systems in both cities... BKK is jammed as Tokyo only during a couple of peak a.m. and p.m. hours and generally in one direction only.

... (still, nothing as Tokyo... no "packers" to put their shoulder to your butt and shove you crotch first into a heaving mass of perspiring flesh... pretty unsettling, that first 40 or 50 times).

... if you are not constrained to a work schedule, the BTS and the MRT are actually quite useable, and are absolutely the best way get about town.

... newbies and visitors to BKK should not be scared away from using either.

Report from Basngkok Post dated 4 April 2013 :-

Thai railways 'bound for China'
======================

Published: 4 Apr 2013 at 09.16 Online news:
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra says the planned high-speed train project will be designed to be part of a system linking with a similar rail system in Laos.

The premier said her aim was to build a high-speed train network that would link Thailand to China via Laos, the Thai News Agency reported Tuesday.

The premier laid out her plan during talks on Tuesday with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongluan Sisulit of Laos. Mr Thongluan is attending the 18th Thai-Lao Joint Commission Meeting in Bangkok.

According to TNA, Mr Thongluan raised the issue of a high-speed train network, and Ms Yingluck agreed.

The prime minister said last week that new trains were a key part of her proposed megaprojects, and said infrastructure should go to the borders and join with neighbouring systems.

The talks with Mr Thongluan took her concept further. The prime minister told him that Thailand will go ahead with the project, eventually linking Nong Khai province in the Northeast with Vientiane, across the Mekong River.

Motorbikes are so nice to get around Bangkok on. Traffic jams do not exist when driving around the city. The only hindrance is some of the real long stop lights.
