There is a currency exchange immediately following the passport control. It is located just a few steps behind the passport control, before the luggage carousels. You can't miss it. On my last trip, I arrived at 1am and it was still open.

Supreme - just picking up on your post - do you know if any female drivers are available or provided?

The website says that they: "Train our drivers to understand what our customers need and might want (for example that some customers like to talk, others do not) "

If a woman was driving I wonder if she would be trained to understand fully what a male passenger like want.

Thanks Supreme:
The only problem I have with the airport, is when leaving. I find the immigration/passport lines unbearable. Is there a way to speed this up with Fast-Track?

Pegasus

If you fly with TG in J or F, besides the pleasant check in area, you get to pass their dedicated immigration booths, isolated from others and usually quite fast, than from there you just need to take the escalators down to the lounge. A nice perk, which I miss when flying other airlines.

FARE SCAMS - Taxi cheats come under fire
=================================

Taxis serving Suvarnabhumi airport are overcharging passengers by tampering with their meters, according to complaints received by the Land Transport Department.

Passengers also accuse taxi drivers of charging an initial meter rate of 95 baht instead of the usual 35 baht, Transport Ministry sources said.

Cheated passengers have called the Land Transport Department's 1584 hotline, claiming they caught taxis on the 4th floor of the airport arrivals terminal. As well as the increased minimum fare, the meter seemed to rise faster by the kilometre, some complaints said.

One passenger said he questioned the driver when he saw the initial charge was 95 baht, and the driver told him the meter was set to cheat foreign passengers.

The driver then asked him to agree to a flat rate and demanded 500 baht for a trip to the Khlong Si area in Pathum Thani's Thanyaburi district, which normally costs about 300 baht. When the man refused, the driver dropped him off before reaching the destination, the source said.

Piyaphan Jampasut, chairman of the Airports of Thailand which supervises Suvarnabhumi airport, said the AoT had appointed a committee to take legal action against cheating taxis and tour guides known to harass passengers at the airport.

The committee, chaired by Land Transport Department chief Chairat Sa-nguansue, has instructed the Suvarnabhumi airport board to use more security guards at the airport and increase the frequency of patrols in the taxi bay areas on the 2nd and 4th floors.

Mr Piyaphan said passengers would be wise to stick to the services at the taxi stand managed by AoT.

"Passengers will have to pay an additional service fee of 50 baht, but the service is safe," he said.

AoT has recorded the profiles of all taxi drivers registered at its stand.

Mr Chairat urged passengers not to hesitate in reporting dishonest taxi drivers.

AIRPORT SCAM - AoT goes after taxi rackets
==================================

Suvarnabhumi airport authorities are going after dishonest taxi drivers, rogue officials and illegal tour guides operating at the airport following a string of complaints in recent weeks.

Airport director Serirat Prasutanond yesterday said he was investigating allegations airport officials had demanded bribes from cab drivers picking up passengers at the airport.

It was reported extortion had forced taxi drivers to overcharge passengers by refusing to either use the meter or by raising the minimum metered fare to 95 baht.

"I will look into the issue myself," Mr Serirat said. "I don't believe any executive is involved. They may just be operational level officials or some junior supervisors.

"If anyone is involved, they will be punished right away."

The investigation will include the examination of video recordings made at the airport over the past 15 days and the Land Transport Department will also be involved because it oversees the airport's taxi services.

Mr Serirat said that if any of the security guard firms are found to be involved in the racket, their contracts would be cancelled.

Chairat Sa-nguansue, director general of the Land Transport Department and head of a special committee set up to deal with the problem, said seven teams of 10 officials would take turns to root out the dishonest taxi drivers and illegal tour guides from June 1.

His panel is made up of representatives from his department, Airports of Thailand and police. It is awaiting approval for funds to finance the operation.

Airport inspectors would also set up booths to advise passengers on fair services and receive their complaints direct, Mr Chairat said.

The public can also call 1584 to leave their complaints.

Vithoon Naewpanich, chairman of Siam Taxi Co-operative Co, accepted that overcharging by taxis existed at Suvarnabhumi but said this was because drivers had to pay kickbacks to AoT staff.

The problem was the responsibility of AoT management, he said.

I had a chinese friend in town recently and he was so pround of himself that he was able to get a taxi minivan from Surva to Suk 1 for 600. He lined up, got the ticket, needed a van for his luggage and was impressed with himself that he got the price down from 1000 to 600...

He was rather disappointed that I told him the fare should have been <400 all in with tolls..... oh well.... live and learn

I've had this happen many times and have learned that

a) never get in the cab until you have agreed to the meter
b) Get out (if you can) even if there is a hint of something wrong
c) Always write down the cab # on the receipt they give you on the taxi queue. I know people that even SMS or email the cab number to another device as added precaution.

I have once called to complain and once actually gotten the police involved... a pointless exercise I might add.

This happens everywhere... so you have to just be ready to deal or walk away.

Taxi cheats, fake tour guides targeted
=============================

Unregistered tour guides and taxis are facing fines of 2,000 baht and/or a year in jail as part of Suvarnabhumi airport's new get tough policy.

The taxi cheats and illegal tour guides followed when Bangkok International Airport moved from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi three years ago.

There have been attempts to flush them out but they just keep coming back.

Airports of Thailand Plc chairman Piyaphan Champasut said yesterday a subcommittee on transport control at the airport had been set up in May to enforce suppression measures on illegal tour guides and taxis.

The subcommittee is chaired by Land Transport Department director-general Chairat Sanugansue.

A special operation unit will work on the ground to ensure the crackdown is effective.

It will also enforce measures such as zoning and parking time limits. Mr Piyaphan yesterday met the Tourist Police Bureau and the Department of Land Transport to discuss the problems at the airport.

The airport was declared a controlled area for tour guides and taxis in 2006.

Mr Piyaphan said scores of illegal tour guides and taxi drivers were arrested and fined, but they simply came back.

The airport will now strengthen the measures.

Unregistered tour guides and taxis could be fined 2,000 baht and face up to a year in prison.

The punishment would be heavier if they adopt an aggressive sales pitch or engage in physical abuse, and if they operate at night. They can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to 10,000 baht.

Mr Piyaphan was confident the stricter measures would start to show results in the next two months. Assessments would be made every 15 days to see if they were working.
