Yes, actually I hardly believe that the system is so sophisticated. Because I think that was the issue over which a lot of discussion occured when the US wanted to get the details over passengers of transatlantic passengers a few weeks ago.
The arrival card is a more plausible explanation. Although tampering with the details doesn't seem to be a hard nut to crack.

Hi all! I will be visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur, and or Singapore but I want to know what kind of visa I can get at the Thai Embassy, in any of these places before returning to Bangkok. Can I get more than a 30 day visa? Have any of you managed to get a 60 or 90 day visa into Thailand from Any of these places? Hi, guys.
Haven't gotten a return from Thai Embassy or consulate sites here, so thought I'd ask you guys: Is there any problem with coming in and out of Thailand several times in the period of one month? Can I enter, then exit 5 days later, return in a week, exit after a few days and then re-re-enter?!

It's actually called a transit visa or VOA (visa on arrival) a tourist visa is the one for two months and has nothing to do with this...
