I've only flown BA 3 or 4 times and I've been upgraded 2 times on a % basis not bad. I've flown many airlines and back in the cheap seats there all the same. United has 5" more legroom in premier economy. SQ has the best looking aircrew.

28 days untill I'm reloaded intothe Thai Matrix for 7 weeks.

A friend recently travelled on a Virgin flight that had personal screens where there were 40 movies to choose from. ÝThe major leap forward is that you have total control over your viewing - start whenever you want, pause if you're going for a leak or want to doze, change movies prematurely, etc.

Essentially, every seat has a dedicated little computer that downloads the movies from a server.

To me, in flight entertainment on a boring 13 hour trip is what influences my choice of airlines more than any other, considering that seat pitch (legroom) varies little between airlines as far as cattle class is concerned.

Thai Airways International details new destinations
Thai Airways International will add Chennai (Madras), Guilin and Luang Prabang to its international route network. New city pairs on Thai's existing route network will also be added as well as frequency increases on routes from Bangkok. The airline is to take delivery of two Boeing 747-400 aircraft in October 2003. The airline already operates 16 of the type.
The new destinations, routes and frequencies will mostly come into effect from 26 October 2003. Thai operates a fleet over 80 aircraft.

Would have to agree that the cheap seats in most aircraft are much of a muchness. ÝI used to work for BA until a couple of years ago, and I tend to be critical of their service but think on the whole they arent too bad in business or first. ÝHaving flown a lot long and shorthaul, the crew on the day makes a huge difference to the flight experience no matter where you are sitting and it is difficult to predict how they will gel as a team or their overall mood until they close the doors. ÝIf money was no object I would choose BA Club or First every time because I think they are a bit more consistent than most.

If you pick a less busy flight (midweek say or strange timing) then it will probably be more fun, but some of the best in flight experiences I have had have been on fully loaded aircraft (admittedly sitting in the pointy end).

My experiences flying to BKK have all been with BA (as both staff and fare paying), EVA Evergreen Deluxe (not flown with them for a while though) and Finnair. ÝI now use Finnair business each time I travel to BKK, and think the service is great, food is generally good the only downside is schlepping out to Helsinki first. ÝMost importantly they have in seat power and you can pre-reserve seats so I always get my favourite (which can be a problem with BA).

In flight entertainment sucks these days on almost every airline I have flown with in the last 2 years. ÝThat is why for me in seat power for the laptop is a big deal I know then I can watch a DVD or 2 on the flight if I cant sleep and get to pause etc. whenever I like.

The new Swiss service looks good, but I am only a couple of flights away from a BA (OneWorld) Gold card so I'm sticking with Finnair for the time being.

As far as the Star Alliance paint job goes, every Star Alliance member has some of their aircraft painted in the Star Colours, this may even be a requirement of the alliance, I used to see lots of aircraft from many carriers painted like that when I worked at LHR. ÝThe individual carriers logo usually appears near the entry door, so can be obscured by the covered gate walkway thing (sorry forgotten the technical term for it, you may guess I didnt work in despatch).

At the end of the day, many carriers are losing a lot of money and the service you will receive in the cheapest seats reflects this (it is a fact, live with it). ÝBA cut down the number of their BKK flights quite a lot and appear to be pretty full most of the time (at least I can never seem to cash in any airmiles on this route) and even the shareholder discount club price is over £1000 more than Finnair.

At the end of the day to use an english phrase "you pays your money, you takes your choice". ÝI think that life is too short to save £1000 by sitting in extreme discomfort for 24 hours or more (on both legs of a trip). ÝA lot of others will probably disagree or may not be as lucky as me to have the luxury of choice.

Talking about Star Alliance, I flew the Pacific yesterday on an Air Canada flight which had a blond stewardess so wide in girth that she had trouble at times navagating the passage way between the rows of seats. Towards the end of the flight she was sweating as well as huffing and puffing so much, that I suggested that she sit down for a while to relax.

Speaking in French, she told me that she was based in Montreal and found long overseas flights too hard on her legs these days. She has been with Air Canada for 30 years!

The business class seats on Air Canada were Ývery comfortable and meals quite good for a company that is functioning under the supervision of a bankruptcy court. The movie selection, however, was certainly not up to Cathy Pacific or Singapore standards.

RTB:

I flew Aeroflot in the mid-70's between Leningrad, Moscow, Tehran and a couple of other points. ÝThe aircraft was a f_cking bomber, the lunches were box lunches and the Stewardi were fresh off the Russian Olympic Ladies Hammer Throw team.

I have heard they have improved but you might want to Google it and check on the most recent airline safety records. ÝAeroflot might not be rated very highly in the safety category.
