Cathay July deal of the month: Roundtrip to BKK for $926 for travel Sept-Nov, stopovers are allowed. Just go to: http://www.cathay-usa.com/dotm/dotm.asp Bobfivehead I would call Cathay and beg them to change your ticket. It's simply not fair to see your airline drastically reduce their fares shortly after your purchase. First you give them your credit card, then they swiftly punch you in the balls two weeks later. Crooks! I'd rather swim to Thailand than be treated this unfairly. This looks to be several hundred dollars less than what Cathay was offering throughout June. Also, when calling, I would speak Chinese rather than English, as they are more likely to give you an exception. Hope this helps.

Mr. Buttman, I took a look at the Cathay site and think that this is a bait and switch as there are still over $300 in add ons. I like the idea of the lay over but I would still be stuck checking in my very large object, no, not that one. It is nice to know that the buttman has my back. Thanks!

An airline ticket is not like a TV set. Airlines are constantly adjusting fares (or number of discount fares available) throughout the day based on how well booking is doing on a particular flight. Like any merchant, the airlines have lots of "markdowns" if they think the product (seat) will go unsold. These markdowns are different than normal product markdowns, because once a flight leaves, they can never recover the lost revenue for that seat. These "markdowns" would usually put the airlines out of business (if they don't go out business anyway because of high fuel costs) if they applied the discount fares to all passengers retroactively, and are usually less than the average revenue per seat needed to cover the costs flying the plane.

Bob Actually, the only add-on is a tax of about $100. The majority of the fees/surcharges are already included. So I figure the fare to be about $1026. I'm really worried that you might have paid too much, and I hate to see you toss your money into the pockets of those capitalist pigs. Your fare was $1133 plus 5,000B ($156) for the Macau stopover. That makes your total fare about $1133+$156= $1289, or roughly $156 too much. For that money, you could purchase one breakfast burrito per day, plus as many pairs of wool underwear your suitcase can hold. I am having my secretary draft a letter in Chinese to the CEO of Cathay Pacific to file a formal complaint on your behalf. Additionally, I will forward a copy to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation for further leverage. I will be signing all letters with your name, Friar Bob Fivehead, so that you will receive all appropriate credit. I wish you wouldn't have gotten me involved in all of this, as it is taking a lot of my time. Anyway, this should all be finalized within the week and both of our lives can proceed with peace and fairness. Brother Buttman From their site: Fare Terms & Conditions Fares listed includes fuel/insurance surcharges from USD $225.80. Additional government taxes and fees ranging from USD $84.76 - $115.56 are not included. Cannot be combined with any other fare or offer. This is a limited time and limited availability offer. Only available for a limited time through 11:59 PST on July 31, 2008 (or until deemed sold out). If you cannot find availability for the dates that you have selected please adjust your travel dates. Waitlisting is not permitted. No minimum stay. Maximum stay 30 days. Cancellation Fee: $100 applies (non-refundable after departure). Change Fee: $100 applies per change per person. This fare can only be purchased online at the special Deal of the Month section of our website at http://www.cathaypacific.com/us by a U.S. resident with a valid U.S. credit card billing address and U.S. mailing address. Electronic ticket purchase only.

Is anyone crying over Thai Air shutting its NY office? No more direct flights from NY...they are still flying direct from L.A. until Oct. 25, then there will be a stopover after that...they may resume direct flights next summer. I am in freakin' shock...I just did 77 hours in country, only took 3 days off work = left Friday at noon from JFK, biz class for 70k miles cause its my birthday month ! Anyway at apt in bkk by 6 pm sat nite, left a very happy man Tuesday at 11 pm, arrive JFK Wednesday 7 am and straight to work. This trip wouldn't have worked out with a stopover, I wish they would have raised prices first, they said the flights were full Any new Yorkers got any ideas? I will never forget the direct flight, it made me feel only a few hours from my sparse one room apt in pinklao, from true happiness, Thai Airaways has broken my heart...je suis desolee.

I found these airfare specials by Asiana. While they don't work for my particular dates of travel, perhaps they might work for someone else. They seem extremely cheap. LAX--->BKK for $492, plus taxes and surcharges. I plugged in several dates and was not able to get that fare--maybe others will be luckier than me. Perhaps it's quicker just to call them. Anyway, here's the link: http://us.flyasiana.com/Global/US/en/homepage?fid=TICKET11000#dvhead

ok, I want to ask a very simple question. Why do all th eairlines have so many sucharges? Why don't they just raise the price of the ticket? In many cases the surcharges equal or exceed the ticket price (U.S. domestic). It is the worst business model I have ever seen...... I know in reall dollar terms flying by air is cheaper now than it ever has been, but why can't the aorlines price their product to make money? Would so amny people really stop flying? I doubt it. Slowdown maybe, but stopping, no.

True. However, as consolation think that one advantage for you (the passenger) of the surchage over the increase in price of the ticket, is that the surcharge is refundable. Should you not travel, you do not loose the full value of what would have been the increased price of the non-refundable ticket (had the airline just simply have increased the price as you suggest). The airline has to reimburse you the fuel surcharges. Anyway, part of the airlinesīreasoning for a flat fuel surchage separate from the price of the ticket itself is that the fuel surchage is the same for all fares (all the people flying in the plane, regardless of class of service or the ticket restrictions). BTW, flying through HKG could result in lower fuel surchages, as they cannot be capriciously set by the airline. Fuel surchages on flights to/from HKG require prior approval by HKG aviation authorities.

Zipster... Yes I am pissed off at Thai cancelling their BKK-JFK flights. I only found out through one of the informed members of this board highlighting it earlier in this thread. Despite the decision having been made some 10 days before, neither Thai or my travel agents here in Phnom Penh had bothered to inform me that my ticket for 11th July was no longer valid. And I am only a Thai Gold Card Member sat there with a $6500 round the world business class ticket. When I wrote to Thai Customer Services voicing my displeasure, the response was....'contact your nearest Thai office and rearrange your flights'.... that was it, not a hint of apology or care whatsoever. It really shows what Thai think of their passengers. Anyway, now rerouted through LAX and United from there to IAD, so will get there eventually. Just waiting for them to scrap the BKK-JNB route now... BS

Interesting - so by picking the proper intermediate destinations one could conceivably avoid or be able to reduce surcharges..?
