Suvarnabhumi to plug holes used in German escape

Source: BangkokPost

Airport officials have been ordered to check all emergency exits at Suvarnabhumi after a German jewel thief managed to flee Australian escorts and exit the airport building during a transit stop in Bangkok.

Suvarnabhumi airport director Rawewan Netrakavesna said the checking was aimed at finding and plugging all security loopholes, starting with an upgrade of the warning system at all entries and exits.

The world's largest single terminal airport has about 300 fire exits. They are equipped with warning systems that are supposed to alert officials at a control centre, a source at Airports of Thailand said.

This happened on the 15th and wasn't reported on the news for 12 days, and they still hadn't tested the other doors yet. The whole time was spent making sure they wouldn't be blamed. The guy even had time to get a massage before he left the airport...lolol.

Report from Bangkok Post dated 30 May 2013 :-

German 'hid for 30 hours'
================

The German convict who slipped his guards at Suvarnabhumi airport spent some 30 hours hiding in the airport before managing to escape, Airports of Thailand (AoT) chairman Sita Divari revealed Wednesday.

The fact he spent so long there undetected has sparked concerns about security lapses at the airport, he said.

Sqn Ldr Sita said an investigation found he had hid in a power generator room before fleeing via a fire exit.

The AoT board has set up a committee chaired by Immigration Bureau commissioner Panu Kerdlappol, who is also an AoT board director, to overhaul security. This includes installing more cameras to cover the entire airport so that any suspect can be located quickly.

"The security cameras may even be installed in concealed places," he said.

Carlo Konstantin Kohl, 25, was being escorted to Germany after having completed a jail term for several robberies in Australia. He managed to give his two security escorts the slip during a stopover in Bangkok on May 15.

An investigation by airport officials found that Kohl had cut the electricity supplying a fire-exit alarm before fleeing the airport.

Pol Lt Gen Panu blamed the two guards hired by Australian authorities for the escape. They asked to use the airport dayroom instead of the detention room on arrival at the airport, he said.

Australian authorities did not follow procedure by failing to inform Thai Immigration police about the transfer of a transnational suspect.

Pol Lt Gen Panu did not believe any Thai officials were involved in helping the German escape. He said he expected the German convict to be captured soon since he did not have much money and would not be able to get very far.

Kohl shows how he fled Suvarnabhumi

Source: BangkokPost

A fugitive being escorted from Australia back to Germany demonstrated on Friday how he slipped away from his Australian security escort and left Suvarnabhumi airport through an exit door to a VIP building.

Carlo Konstantin Kohl was on Friday taken by immigration police to the airport for a re-enactment of his escape on May 16.

Kohl and his two-person escort were on a Thai Airways flight from Brisbane that arrived in Suvarnabhumi about 8pm on May 15.

I haven't used a regular taxi from where you're supposed to get them at Suvarnabhumi Airport since it opened. I've always gone directly upstairs, out the door, and picked up someone letting off passengers. I always seem to negotiate a good deal and off we go. But now things have changed? Have they blocked the exits yet? Or is it still possible?

"A source said on Thursday Kohl had about US$100 (3,000 baht) in his pocket at the time of his escape. He took a taxi downtown and handed all the cash he had to the driver."

...a good day for Somchai......

Can you still use the upstairs departure as a place to get a taxi? Just asking.

I think it's still possible, though I've stopped doing that. The last time I tried it the airport security chased and stopped the taxi that I was trying to flag down. I'll have try it again.

The official ground floor taxi stalls work fine for me...

Never had to queue up for more than a minute or two... Couldn't care less about the extra 50 THB...

And yes, the departure level solution is a hit and miss with the security... It's not allowed, but of course they are too lazy to enforce the rules...

I understood that one-way turn-styles had been installed on the departure level but they were not operational as yet....doesn't really make sense, many people see friends or relatives off at the airport and then exit at Departures to get home ?!?
