Report from The Nation dated 6 August 2013 :-

New measures for Suvarnabhumi Airport to accommodate high passenger flow
=================================================

Suvarnabhumi Airport is expected to accommodate 27.47 million passengers during the upcoming high season, according to Airports of Thailand's estimates.

This is a 5.50 per cent growth last year's high season.

The number accounts for 57.6 per cent of the 47.7 million passengers using the six international airports operated by AOT during the six-month period starting from October. The number of passengers will increase by 8.7 per cent from the same period last year.

The figures were revealed after a meeting between Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt and AOT executives. They were brainstorming on measures to enhance the airports' efficiency, in light of the increasing volume of traffic.

Among the planned improvements is an increase in check-in counters at Suvarnabhumi Airport, including computerised check-in booths. Airlines will also be encouraged to use check-in counters at Makkasan Rail Station.

Airport Link 'needs more trains'
====================

The Airport Rail Link needs more trains so it can better serve the needs of a growing number of passengers, Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt said on Tuesday.

Mr Chadchart wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday that he had travelled to Suvarnabhumi airport on the ARL city line to see off Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who was flying out to Tajikistan and Pakistan on Monday morning.

On his way back he noticed that the train was almost full after going only one stop from the airport. At some stations, passengers had great difficulty getting on the train because there were so many people on board, he said.

The transport minister said around 43,000 commuters use the city line of the Airport Rail Link each day, which has only five trains, while around 1,500 people take the express line, which has two trains.

The city line leaves from Phayathai station every 15 or 20 minutes on its 25-minute journey the airport. The express line leaves every hour and the trip takes 15 minutes.

In addition to more trains, Mr Chadchart added that there are other areas in which the company could also improve its service to travellers

There should be more escalators at some ARL stations, and many of the stops on the line still need to be connected to stations serving other forms of public transport, he said

Adjustments should be made to the ARL organisational structure, because its current position as a subsidiary of the State Railway of Thailand allows little flexibility in its management, he added.

The company should also provide better welfare and clear career paths for its employees, the transport minister said

AoT to raise airport departure tax
======================

The Airports of Thailand board of directors has agreed on the need to raise the airport departure tax for both domestic and international passengers by 100 baht, AoT Chairman Sita Divari said on Thursday.

The departure tax for domestic flights would rise from 100 baht to 200 baht, and from 700 baht to 800 baht for international flights, Mr Sita said.

The increase still needs final approval from aviation and transport authorities.

The new fees would apply at all airports operated by AoT when approved.

The latest attack on tourists' wallets comes on top of the government's move to charge foreigners a new arrival tax at airports and land border crossings.

On Sunday, Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said the government is considering a plan to charge foreigners a 500-baht entry fee from January next year. He claimed the extra charge would lead to an improvement in the quality of tourists entering Thailand.

It would also offset the costs of state hospitals treating tourists who have accidents or fall ill and have no insurance cover.

Foreigners who arrive at airports would be charged 500 baht while those who enter the country by land would be charged 30 baht a day.

The foreigner-entry charge has been widely criticised on web forums, by tour operators and people working in the hospitality industry.

Malaysian tourists are the latest group to complain.

Withaya Lim, a tour operator in Hat Yai, said many tour agencies and tourists from Malaysia had contacted him to complain after they learned of the entry charge plan.

"This will increase costs for tour agencies bringing people to Thailand and they will have to pass the cost on to their customers," Mr Withaya said.

"I'm afraid this will result in a drop in the number of foreign tourist arrivals, particularly from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei."

According to the AoT, passenger traffic through Thailand's six main airports showed robust growth in the fiscal year to last month, climbing 20.4% from the previous year to 86.13 million travellers, both domestic and international.

The number of flights through these airports increased by 16.5% to 559,397 during the same period.

Suvarnabhumi, the country's gateway airport, continued to dominate traffic volume with 50.90 million passengers and 287,997 flights, accounting for 59% of overall passenger numbers and 51.5% of all take-offs and landings.

It was followed by Bangkok's second airport Don Mueang, which largely serves discount airlines, with 15.56 million passengers and 135,976 flights.

Phuket airport recorded 10.98 million passengers with 70,198 flights.

Chiang Mai had 5.17 million passengers and 41,295 flights, while Hat Yai had 2.47 million passengers and 17,056 flights, and Chiang Rai 1.05 million passengers and 6,882 flights.

Suvarnabhumi is served by 107 international airlines. The airport connects Bangkok with more than 150 cities around the world.

The top five nationalities of tourists arriving through Suvarnabhumi are Chinese, Japanese, Indian, South Korean and Russian.

Most airline cover this charge in their ticket cost so I do not expect it will make much difference on the traveler's side.

Wont be long before you hear greetings in these languages by sex workers *(instead of WEL~KOM !!!)

Recently in a Pattaya bar K Pop was played for over an hour as the Korean men took over the pool table bought lady drinks and bar fined 4 girls.

I didn't mind as I wasn't fishing for pussy till later at the Go GO a few minutes down the street.

But it was worth noting.

You gotta wonder how many more Russians and Indians will invade too.?

The Middle Eastern folks and Nigerians round off the mix.

For once the Thai Government might have something here.?

Airport Rail Link check-in likely to begin next year
===============================

Business Airline passengers will possibly be able to check in at Makkasan station of the Airport Rail Link (ARL) starting next year, as part of government plans to ease traffic congestion at the country's main airport

ARL operator SRT Electrified Train Co (SRTET) will team up with tourism and airport agencies to operate a city check-in system at the Makkasan station similar to those in Britain, Hong Kong, Malaysia and and France, said chief executive Peerakan Kaewwongwattana.

The check-in and luggage loading systems need to be improved, and the process will be finished by year-end or early next year, he said.

"As As Suvarnabhumi airport has experienced high passenger congestion, the 10,000 square metres of the ARL's Makkasan station is capable of transporting 10,000 passengers a day," he said.

As well, frequency will be increased on the Express Line early next year, leaving every half hour compared with every hour at present, said Mr Peerakan.

AoT tightens airport taxi rules
===================

Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) has tightened rules for taxis collecting passengers at Suvarnabhumi to boost traveller safety and ease traffic flow.

Airport director Rawewan Netrakavesna said turnstiles have been put in place since Nov 1 to block inbound air passengers from catching taxis on the departures floor.

The measure is aimed at relieving traffic congestion in the departures area drop-off zone, situated on the airport's fourth floor.

The measure was implemented in response to reports that many taxi drivers who were dropping off passengers at the departures area would wait there in an attempt to pick up another fare.

This led to traffic congestion and blocked private vehicles from using the drop-off zone, Ms Rawewan said.

Those taxi drivers also posed a safety risk to passengers because airport authorities did not have their licence details, she added.

Reports had also emerged of overcharging, refusal to use meters and various crimes committed against passengers by some of these taxi drivers, the airport director said. The newly installed turnstiles on the fourth floor only allow people to enter the airport's passenger terminal, and force inbound passengers to catch taxis from the first floor only.

On this floor, only taxi drivers who are registered with AoT are allowed to operate.

Passengers who use these registered taxis are subject to a surcharge of 50 baht on top of the regular fare, and are handed a receipt with the driver's details in case a complaint needs to be made.

AoT allows only taxis that have been in use for no longer than two years to collect passengers on the first-floor ramp.

AoT also plans to introduce an automatic queue ticketing system to let passengers wait comfortably for their taxis without standing in line, Ms Rawewan said. The system will also enable passengers to log in their destinations and their preferred taxi size

Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt said the new turnstile measure had increased the number of taxi trips departing from the first-floor ramp from 6,000 to 9,000 per day. He said this figure proved that the new system was effective

"...preferred taxi size", yeah riiiight...lololol. For the 50 baht airport charge, you can instead grab the City Line BTS train on the bottom floor, and get into town for 45baht max. A much smarter move if you're not loaded down with luggage. Then catch a taxi to your hotel from the last station, and save about 200baht.

Travellers told to leave early for airport

Air travellers are being advised to leave for Suvarnabhumi Airport four hours ahead of their flights on Monday when many anti-government groups will march to Government House for the "final battle" mass rally and Bangkok traffic is expected to worsen.

Commuters are also recommended to use the Airport Rail Link between Suvarnabhumi and Bangkok to avoid being caught in traffic jams, the airport announced on Sunday.
