expat-

Not flown 'Scare-a-lot' but I understand they are quite Westernised now. i.e. Most airlines are much the same in economy. They now use Boeing 777, Boeing 767, Airbus A310-300, and DC-10's. As well as the Ilyushin Il-86 & IL-96. I think the IL-96 is a half decent aircraft. The TBO's on Russian engines can never match the West but they seem to work well enough on the IL-96.

The cold weather and structure testing on Russian airliners is very strict. They frequently fly in adverse conditions.

A couple of years ago a Russian in Don Muang told me his fare from Moscow to Bangkok was $400 return. Not bad ?

I have flown in a Hungarian 'Malev' Airlines TU-154.
Great fun ! Great noise ! He caught a 'jetstream' up at 41,000ft and we got to Budapest early !

1133 hrs LHR the last Concorde has taken off. I watched it from the roof. Very sad. Don't believe any of the official excuses why it stopped flying. They are all crap. A bit like BA really, all crap !

Today's Thai B747 is in Star Alliance colours.
Last week I spoke to a manager with Thai. He said he believed that one day ALL Thai aircraft would be in Star Alliance colours with just a small Thai logo by the door.
This IS part of the APEC philosophy !

Thai has ordered six Airbus A380-800 aircraft, which are initially planned to be delivered in October 2010 and June 2011 for use on services to Frankfurt, Paris and London

From which country do you fly? I travel quite a bit the entire year, and would offer some suggestions if given more info.

Peg1, he mentioned LHR BKK. LHR is the code for London Heathrow (United Kingdom).

Thai Air flies direct from Oslo - Norway to BKK since June. It's not a 747 and I do not know about TV screens in the back of the seats, but the convenience of a shorter flightwith no stop - over beats it. Flying Jan 9th w/family so no Sukumvit or Pattaya but can write a report on the flight. for those few still on the board from this country.

I thought Thai had postponed the delivery of the Airbuses ?

Agree, the 747's (400) on the LHR - BKK route are so old. However, the flight does have a certain "charm" to it, unlike the Eva flight, which is mostly Chinese and doesn't get you in the mood.

Having flown the LHR - BKK route many times, I would have to say Thai is the best option (Business), but due to their old planes, if you are flying economy, I think EVA or even Emmirates would be more comfortable, if you can make use of the stopover.

As for upgrades on Thai - forget it (at least on the LHR - BKK route).

thats what I heard they postponed delivery of A380s,

i fly LHR/BKK 4 times a year but now thinking of making it 3 times and staying longer,

thai is good in that you only need 50,000 miles for gold with comp return upgrade. lounges I hardly use,

was thinking of EVA miles but dont understand the requirements.

their new 777s look nice, unlike the old 747 combis, so small.

the other direct choices are BA, quantas, or indirect SIA, emirates, quatar

thanx for all replies

Found this in the Post Bag on Thai...

Your article ''Ticket upgrade row spurs suit'' (News. Dec 28) does not surprise me in the least. Up until about 18 months ago I and my wife were regular first-class travellers (three times annually) aboard TG916/TG917 to and from London.

Minutes prior to departure of each flight I would always check the seating arrangements via the ''Check my Trip'' website and generally find there were only three or four bookings in first class for the flight. Yet on virtually every flight the cabin was fully occupied, with the ''empty'' seats being taken always by Thai people.

This led to a situation whereby there were insufficient staff to provide a half-decent service, especially to those who had booked and paid for seats in the first class section. Had there been prior notification of the cabin being full THAI might have provided the correct amount of cabin crew.

I pointed this out to THAI via e-mails on a number of occasions together with various other complaints about old aircraft, lack of comfort and, more importantly, the fact that they did not supply value for money. Not once did I receive an acknowledgement let alone a response. I don't want to be a continual ''moaner'' so I just accepted their ''couldn't give a damn'' attitude and took my business elsewhere.

Living in Phuket, we heeded the advice of other frequent travellers to London and Europe to go via Singapore and as from 18 months or so ago we have never looked back. Flying business class with airlines from Singapore to London is infinitely more comfortable, provides better service than you would ever get from THAI first class and most importantly gives value for money.

On one occasion we received an unexpected upgrade to first class and we were so spoilt that in comparison it made THAI first class look rather like another airline's premium economy. Some one time prominent person once said "THAI First Class sucks" and I couldn't agree more. It is made worse that they allow prominent and influential people to use their premium services for free (or for a 'small backhander') and it is so noticeable to the fare paying passenger that they, like ourselves, no longer fly with them. When and until the corruption and malpractice, which allegedly starts at the very top, is stamped out, THAI will never ever be a viable airline.

I await with interest the outcome of the court hearing, but somehow I doubt that it will ever get that far: more likely we will never hear about the squabble again. If it does defy the norm and ends up in court, perhaps then it might just open a small can of worms which can provide the basics for a start to stamping out the corruption which is rampant throughout the airline.
