Sorry, but rugby is not my native dialect.

Most people from outside NSW or Queensland like me don't know very much about rugby. Average attendance for an NRL Melbourne rugby match is only 12,000 and that's with Melbourne on top of the ladder!

Last week in AFL (Aussie Rules) the 15th team played the bottom (16th) team who had lost 14 straight games and still there was a crowd of nearly 50,000 so you probably know more about rugby than moi.

Sorry to break the sports discussion but back to AirAsia.

Took my TGF to Singapore for her first overseas trip last weekend. (Took to destroying my credit card available credit limit on Orchard Road like a true professional.)

Took the late afternoon flight out of BKK and the late night flight back out of SIN. On both occassions the flight ran exactly one hour late. Next day at BKK when returning to SYD noticed the BKK-SIN flight again an hour late. Back in SYD, called a mate in the industry, AirAsia have been running these flights an hour late for weeks. But they are still selling at the old times. Seems noone would travel on the late night SIN-BKK flight if they know what time it really flew.

Apart from that, was cheap and clean. Return flight only half full but God the seats are close together. First time ever I couldn't slouch down and extend my legs under the seat in front.

Regards,
F46

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 7 November 2006 :-

Thai AirAsia offers lower airfares
========================

Thai AirAsia has introduced its "Knock-Out Sale 2007", offering extremely low airfares starting at Bt55 for domestic routes and Bt255 for international routes

Interested persons may reserve seats online at http://www.airasia.com. The booking date for tickets is today to November 18 for travel from next January 8 to March 31.

"From now to March is a peak season for travel in Thailand. Thai AirAsia is giving low airfares, the better to serve the travel needs of domestic and international passengers. Air travel no longer remains unaffordable, because now everyone can fly with Thai AirAsia," said CEO Tassapon Bijleveld.

In a related development, ThaiAir Asia is acquiring its 11th aircraft about the middle of next month, enabling it to increase its flights to selected destinations and thereby enhance its services for both domestic and international passengers. Starting on December 15, Thai AirAsia flights from Bangkok will increase to five times daily to Phuket, three to Krabi, six to Hat Yai and six to Kuala Lumpur.

Next month's aircraft acquisition is part of Thai AirAsia's plan to expand its fleet of aircraft next year. Thai AirAsia, which expects to carry 6 million passengers this year, is aiming at 8 million passengers next year.

Thai AirAsia currently flies domestic routes to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Krabi, Narathiwat, Phuket, Surat Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani. International destinations include Phnom Penh, Macau, Xiamen, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Rangoon, Singapore and Hanoi.

I have flown with air asia twice on the Singapore route and will not be going with them again. Both times the flights were full, and at the gate prior to boarding it was like an out of control crowd waiting to go into a football game that had already started !!

I put the first time down to bad luck, but the second time was the same... so thats it with air asia.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 9 January 2007 :-

AirAsia order supports expansion
=========================

AirAsia, Southeast Asia's largest budget carrier with extensive operations in Thailand, has placed an order for 100 additional Airbus A320 planes, worth about US$6 billion, to support its aggressive expansion.

The order, signed with the European plane maker in London, represents one of largest plane purchases recently and will make AirAsia the second largest A320 operator in the world by 2012.

The deal will double the budget airline's fleet of A320s to 200.

The order is line with AirAsia's view that its operations in Asia, through its three units - Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia - will continue to grow robustly in the future among cost-conscious travellers.

AirAsia expected its passenger volume to reach 15 million for the financial year to June 2007, rising to 54 million a year over the next seven years, group chief executive Tony Fernandes told the Bangkok Post yesterday in a phone interview from London.

Since its inception five years ago, the airline has carried 27 million passengers.

Mr Fernandes insisted the growth projection was not too optimistic, saying there were still many people in Asia who wanted to fly, and budget carriers had made it easier and more affordable for them.

"Let's look at Asean alone - we have 500 million people, giving us the critical mass to grow," he said.

"As we enter 'Chapter 2' of AirAsia, the additional order (for A320s) will allow us to further strengthen our route network in the region by developing our hubs in Bangkok and Jakarta, connecting more points and expanding into Indochina, Indonesia, southern China and India."

AirAsia wants to use the hefty increase in capacity to primarily consolidate its existing networks by means of raising frequencies on existing routes, which was expected to drive the airline's growth, according to Mr Fernandes.

Thai AirAsia will be a key driver of growth, especially in jumping into the markets of southern China and India.

The 100 additional A320s, each capable of carrying 150 passengers up to 5,700 kilometres, are due to be delivered to AirAsia between 2010 and 2014.

The group planned to allocate 80 of its total of 200 A320s to the Malaysian operation, and 60 each for its Thai and Indonesian subsidiaries, he said.

The A320s are steadily replacing AirAsia's old Boeing 737-300 fleet. The group currently operates 36 Boeing 737-300s.

AirAsia will use its own funds as well as borrowings from international lenders to finance the new Airbus planes.

Report from The STAR (Malaysia) dated Wednesday 10 January 2007 :-

AirAsia offers 1 million free seats
=========================

SEPANG: AirAsia is giving away one million free seats in a promotional campaign that runs until Jan 19, 2007.

Bookings for the seats, which started at midnight yesterday, are for over 80 routes across 10 countries.

However, this is only for online bookings, primarily from its six hubs — Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Johor Baru, Bangkok and Jakarta.

This regional marketing campaign, held for the second time, was initiated to coincide with Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

The first campaign was in 2005.

AirAsia executive vice-president (commercial) Kathleen Tan said the promotion was available at all its hubs in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

"We are confident that this online marketing campaign will encourage more people to fly."

Tan added that RM2 million in advertising had been pumped in to boost the 10-day campaign in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Macau, China, Philippines, Brunei, Cambodia and Myanmar.

With 50 aircraft and more Airbus A320 rolling out this year, AirAsia has added direct flights connecting Sabah and Sarawak to Penang, and new direct routes from Kota Kinabalu to Macau, Bangkok to Langkawi and Jakarta to Kuching.

AirAsia expects its capacity to grow by 70 per cent with added frequencies and more new points connected within the Asean and the southern China regions.

The campaign is open for the travel period between April 1 and Oct 27, 2007.

Seats are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

However, the offer does not include airport taxes and fees, as well as fuel surcharges.

It is also applicable for one-way travel only.

"Our website airasia.com is surfed by online visitors from over 180 countries, making it the most highly searched and highly popular e-commerce booking engine," Tan said.
