Bombsquad: I totally agree with you about Thai "service" these days. And how it has changed to the worse over the period of years I have been flying with them (30+!). Note: their service have dipped so much that we who use bus or 1st class have complained to them in such a degree that they see it necessary to have further training for their staff! ONLY reason I use them is because I park my ass in one of their worndown seats in Sweden and 11 hours later I embark in BKK and am happy to be back! I happen to have some contacts within Thai and to hear their "reasoing" about their airline is something you as a western businessman just dont understand! Sorry to say: but my regards for thai "businessthinking" is not very high. So hit me now...... As for the airline industry it is in worse shape than most us can imagine or realise. Today I see the oil price is 144 usd per barrel. No signs of dipping. 5 years ago Virgin airline had a fuel bill for 250 mill STG. Now it is in excess of 1200 mill pound STG! Ooops!! There are reports from many (or MOST rather!) major airlines now that they will cut costs drastically. That includes grounding at least 12% of the fleet for the coming year. That is IF the oil price remains at this level! However there are many analysts that claim price could reach 200 or even 250 usd per barrel! A french economist had studied the phenomena and figured that if 200 usd is reached - world economy as we know it will collapse! You tell me.... At the same time you have the world credit banking problems. Which they say is the worst since the 1930īs depression. My tickets for LOS in august and december are flagged to be already 200 usd more expensive. And I dont think it will stop there! Ok - I can afford it and I dont know at what level I will say "no it is too expensive - I wont go to LOS again!!"..... It will simply not happen?! Or will it? Well - if this terrible ordeal with the financial world and oil price will continue - what says it wont affect my company so bad that I perhaps have to shut down! Could happen! Nothing is certain when you are your own. But as for airline tickets: I suggest if you can - book NOW and pay for it at the same time! Very likely you will save some dollares. My final worry is if this world eco problem will reduce the total tourism to LOS. Many people there are living on the edge and really need our business!

the real answer to the problem is to charge by the pound (or kilo).... this includes ALL your bags and the person. Then charge for every soda and water served. A real "pay to play' operation.... but the fat people in the world wold be so against standing on a scale at an airport. I am over 200 lbs myself, but it is of my own choosing. I like to eat. I like to f***. I am a pig, so charge me extra for my personal decisions. Why should a skinny person with no luggage pay the same as a 300 lb pig with max carry on and max weight of a checke din bag?

Cargo in airlines gets charged by a combo volume-weight rate. If the cargo is very dense it gets charged based on weight; if not, it gets charged based on volume. Now people get charged based on volume only (the one seat they occupy).

Quote: from S M E G M A on 12:32 pm on July 7, 2008 BTW, flying through HKG could result in lower fuel surchages, as they cannot be capriciously set by the airline. Fuel surchages on flights to/from HKG require prior approval by HKG aviation authorities.
Interesting - so by picking the proper intermediate destinations one could conceivably avoid or be able to reduce surcharges..?
Yes. Take for example the case of Singapore Airlines. As recent as last month its YQ charges (YQ is the code to denote the fuel surcharge) were: SIN-KUL $40 SIN-CGK $40 SIN-HKG $21.90 SIN-CMB $100 A flight to Hong Kong, almost 4 times longer than one to Kuala Lumpur, and thus consumes as much more fuel, gets charged half. A flight to Colombo, same flying time as to HKG, gets charged almost 5 times more.

I read somewhere that the airlines plan that each passenger including their bags weigh around 225 pounds. I don't remember the exact number, but this is how they plan on passenger airlines. My point is thatby charging by the pound (or kilo) an airline can regain some sort of control over these expenses. Remember, in the passenger hold, all that area is set aside for carryons and passengers so the goal would be to minimize the weight at the maxamine price. And then charge for everything on board... water, sodas, etc. On the news last night they ran some numbers and if American Airlines charged for sodas they would save $100 million per year. Not pocket change at all. Airlines need to do what everyone else does and that is to find ways to earn incramental dollars by adding value added services and charging for them. Airport lounges, make them even more exclusive or charge $10 a person no matter what membership level the flier is. If you can't check your own bags, $10. Can't check in off a kiosk? $10. Want a bottle of water on the plane? $5. headset to watch a movie? $5. Oversize bags like golf clubs? $10. Either continue to nickle and dime us or just flat out raise fares. On an inflation adjusted basis it costs less to fly now than at any time in our history. The other side is that airports make WAY more than their fair share. Between gate fees, landing fees, baggage fees, parking etc, they have a monopoly on the whole system.

Hey, agreed - I would not mind if airlines charged for amenities I don't use (sodas, fluff, etc...), or started charging by the pound for luggage.

I've taken a bit of a different approach to flying to Thailand. It requires a bit of work on my part but so far has gotten me to Thailand on frequent flier trips the last two times. Delta is running a promotion now for a Car Rental on Budget or Avis. One day car rental gets you 9,999 frequent flier miles Typical weekend rental is $32 and change. For about 3 hours of my time I can have 30,000 miles for under $100. The max rental is 3 and is good until Aug 1. One month ago they had a similar Avis deal for One day rentals for 5k miles. I completed these at just under $100 for 15k skymiles. Budget is also running a deal now for 5k miles with the rental of a GPS unit and a 1-day rental. This will be another 15k for about $135. Budget is a bit more expensive. All in all I will have 60k miles (a free freqent flier ticket) for about $300 and a little change. I haven't done this yet but several of my friends who are married to Thai ladies are doing this as well. They rent a car 3 times using their skymiles number and then 3 times using their wifes number. One even used his 17 year old sons number. All miles posted with no problems. LS

Just got back from a trip to BKK (from SFO) and noticed that due to the baggage fees, more peole are carrying on luggage instead of checking it. These people also want to board early to get the overhead space. As charges go up, this will only get worse. Luckily, I am a mileage plus member and I can board early... Pity those who have to try and find space for their bags later. gary

I thought I was hard done by. I asked Thai Air to itemise the 'tax' charges they plonk on top of the airfare. The phone call came back 'No we can't'. Had to laugh at their cheeky response
