Thai AirAsia to open more China routes, eyes India
=====================================

BANGKOK: While its founders continue to break new grounds with the start of long-haul operations to destinations like London, Thai AirAsia is expanding its wings to more destinations in China and penetrating into India.
Chief Executive Officer Tassapon Bijleveld said the three-year-old airline, which flew three million passengers in 2006, will focus on opening three to four routes in middle and small size cities in China this year before going into the untapped markets in India.

He said among the cities in China being considered are Kunming, Guangzhou and Shenzhen while in India, it hopes to fly to Chennai, Bangalore, Calcutta and Bodhgaya which is the spiritual home of Buddhists and also several cities along the Indian border with Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Tassapon, who worked with Warner Music Thailand before joining Thai AirAsia at its inception in 2004, said the China and Indian market would be accessible with the entry of new aircraft, adding that it would have 40 Airbus within five years.

"All these destinations are within the range of our aircraft. We have 11 aircraft in operation now and one for spare and we will be getting three more Airbus and two Boeing this year," he said in an interview here yesterday.

Citing China as a huge and untapped market, Tassapon said even smaller and middle size cities have population of more than 10 million with attractive tourism products and beautiful scenery along the Yangtze River.

At the moment, Thai AirAsia flies to Xiamen and Macau in China, besides other overseas destinations - Phnom Penh, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Yangon, Singapore, Hanoi and Langkawi.

On destinations in the South-East Asia, Tassapon said they would fly to Manila at the end of this year while other routes in the pipeline are Bali, Jakarta and Vientiane.

He said Thai AirAsia did well last year despite the stiff competition.

"We achieved our target of flying three million passengers, with average of 80 percent load factor," he added.

My flight with AirAsia so far

Phuket
Yangon
PP
Penang
Macau x 2

One time they cancelled a flight (Phuket->BKK) and we had to wait 4 or 5 hrs for the evening flight. Also in December they moved the flight back from Penang to BKK to the earlier (!) plane, but the SMS with this information arrived 2 days in advance.

So in general I would not complain about them, the only thing is one should never plan any connection flight on the same day... this might end in chaos.

Compared to Ryan Air (Europe's main LC carrier) they are a little bit more tolerant for the flight luggage (weight, pieces).

But it would be nice that ThaiAirAsia is offering their homepage also in English, sometimes TAA has additional packages in offer you can't see from the English (Malay AirAsia) homepage.

Just got back from a trip to Penang.

The trip to as well as from went perfect. No delays, even earlier than schedule.

Well, they utilize their planes pretty good. 5 minutes after passagens arriving got out, the new group of passengers was ready to board.

Thai AirAsia adds insurance
=====================

Thai AirAsia has teamed up with New Hampshire Insurance to offer travel insurance products and services to passengers.

"We are pleased to be the first airline in Thailand to offer our guests the ability to add travel insurance to their flight bookings. Our guests may now avail of Thai AirAsia GoInsure Travel Protection provided by NHI, a member company of the American International Group," CEO Tasapon Bijleveld said yesterday.

Premiums range from Bt74.90 for a one-way domestic trip to Bt210 for an international round trip lasting up to 30 days.

Passengers aged from nine days to 75 years are eligible for coverage.

Depending on the type of plan selected, GoInsure provides coverage for baggage and personal effects, personal accident, accident medical reimbursement, emergency medical evacuation, trip delay, trip cancellation and other contingencies.

Steven Barnett, president of New Hampshire Insurance, said these travel insurance products were designed especially for Thai AirAsia guests.

"Thai AirAsia will now be providing its guests with an affordable, valuable product they may not otherwise have the opportunity to take advantage of," he said.

Since the soft launch in early December, more than 46,000 passengers have opted for Thai AirAsia GoInsure.

I have never had an afternoon flight on Thai AirAsia takeoff on time. Never. I always use Nok if I am flying within the country or Thai Airways if I know my luggage will be over the wieght limit. Thai AirAsia does well in the morning hours.

Thai AirAsia to fly daily to Xiamen
=========================

To serve the rising number of Chinese tourists and business people, Thai AirAsia will fly daily to Xiamen in China from March 25, increasing its flights from four a week, says CEO Tassapon Bijleveld.

He said the increase in flight frequency came less than two years after the airline began flying to Xiamen.

The Bangkok-Xiamen route, which opened in April 2005, enjoyed an average load factor of 85 per cent last year, he said in a statement.

"Our decision to fly to Xiamen daily will accommodate the strong demand on the Bangkok-Xiamen route. Travel between these two cities continues to increase in popularity," he said.

Xiamen, dubbed China's Garden by the Sea, is among Asia's best-known cities and offer visitors a mix of spectacular natural scenery and vibrant city entertainment.

To match the increased flight frequency, Tassapon said Thai AirAsia would offer low fares for travel between the two cities.

The three-year-old airline, which carried three million passengers last year, is also offering 20,000 seats under its latest promotion designed for travelling families this summer.

It offers low airfares for domestic destinations and international travel, with local routes starting at Bt299 for travel between March 19 and April 27 this year.

For international routes, the fare, excluding tax, starts at Bt499 to Phnom Penh, Penang and Langkawi; Bt699 to Singapore; and Bt899 to Xiamen and Macau.

The subsidiary of Malaysia's AirAsia currently flies domestic routes to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Krabi, Narathiwat, Phuket, Surat Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani while its overseas destinations are Xiamen, Macau, Phnom Penh, Rangoon, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, Penang and Singapore.

Thai AirAsia gets green light for daily flights to Shenzhen
===========================================

The budget carrier Thai AirAsia has obtained China's approval to start daily service from Bangkok to Shenzhen in July.

Shenzhen, one of fastest growing cities in southern China and located at the border with Hong Kong, will become Thai AirAsia's 11th international destination and its 20th on its overall network.

The airline, partly owned by the Malaysian budget giant AirAsia, plans to start a daily service on the new route from July 16, using the 148-seat Boeing 737-300 jetliners, chief executive Tassapon Bijleveld said.

The no-frills carrier mainly targets tourists for the route to the new Chinese destination, which is especially popular among shoppers.

Thai AirAsia will begin sales on the new route on May 24 with fares being close to what it charges for its existing service from Bangkok to Macao.

Plans are also afoot for other new routes to China, including Kunming, Chengdu and Chongqing, later this year.

To support its 2007 growth plan, Thai AirAsia plans to have five additional jets _ three new Airbus A320s and two Boeing B737-300s _ operational later this year.

The three A320s are part of an order of 40 new A320s due to join its fleet over the next six years.

By 2012, the carrier plans to operate up to 320 flights a day through its Bangkok hub from 82 a day currently, while doubling passengers per year to up to nine million.

Thai AirAsia intends to phase out its 11 ageing and fuel-thirsty Boeing 737-300s over the next two years as it embraces more fuel-efficient planes.

Thai AirAsia travel fair
================

Thai AirAsia will boost tourism later this month by hosting the Amazing Travel Deals Fair, with the airline offering tickets for as low as Bt9.

With 60 computer screens at its booth to handle demand, the low-cost carrier will offer rates from Bt9 for domestic routes and Bt399 for international routes, excluding fuel surcharge, tax and insurance.

The airline expects to generate Bt50 million in sales from the event.

The fair takes place from May 24-27 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre.

Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld said in hosting the event, the airline was partnering with Kasikornbank, LG Electronics and American International Assurance, as well as hotels, travel operators and entertainment operators and tourism offices from abroad, to ensure reasonable prices for travellers.

The fair is expected to attract more than 150,000 visitors, following the success of last year's event.
