Quote: from Evil Penivel on 7:17 pm on Aug. 16, 2006 It will be a major drag to have to ride a shuttle bus to a "transportation center" to get a taxi into BKK. That means an extra 30 - 45 minutes before you even get in the cab.
Already, this is sounding like a heavily misplanned airport - all it will mean is that not only will it be overflowing with all kinds of limousine and fake taxi scammers, but now they have an extra scam "Meeester - drive you to taxi center, 200 baht, okay, na?" and then upsell you once in the car. I guess if there's a public transportation center, that would mean that genuine taxis won't be allowed anywhere in that area - though I'd wonder how long that would last.

Well I am certainty glad that the powers to be reconized that the new high-speed rail train that is being built will drop passengers right in the heart of pussy ville and appropirately named it the "Pink Line"
The construction of the City Airport Terminal in Makkasan and a 28.6 km high-speed rail link to the new airport started in July 2005 and are planned for completion in November 2007. The airport express, informally known as the Pink Line and operated jointly with SRT's planned Red Line commuter service, will connect with the BTS Sukhumvit Line and MRT Blue Line at Phaya Thai and Phetchaburi stations respectively, offering airport-bound passengers a fast 15-minute limited stop journey from the city.

I hope the new airport express works out cheaper than the Heathrow express in London, that is about £13 single (900 baht) for a 15 minute journey.

It will be cheaper. Instead of £ 0.9 per minute, it will be £ 0.8 per minute.

Monday, I got a wild hair and decided to play tourist- went to check out the new airport. I started off by going to the On Nut BTS were I intended to catch the aircon-552 bus which would have taken me directly to the terminal. But after waiting well over 40 minutes- possibly getting distracted and missing one- I hailed a taxi and off we went. The route from Sukhumvit is a very direct one via the Bang Na Rd. We then came up a perimeter road which would be at the bottom of the map in the link I'll soon supply. Once we got out to the Suvarnabhumi Public Transport Terminal [bus station] the meter read 185 Baht. About the same price as I pay from my to apartment to Don Muang, actually. After walking around a bit I got invited on a free Airport Shuttle Bus tour that they seem to run throughout the day. I couldn't tell whether they ran this on a schedule, or when they had X number of people assembled. But I did get a complimentary map of the airport [a part of which is what I scanned], a refrigerator magnet, and an I Love the King bumper sticker. Most of the pics I took during the tour, I've posted online for your viewing pleasure: Sanam Bin Suvarnabhumi Enjoy! PS- Still in the mood to play tourist, once the tour was over, I jumped on the Victory Monument bus where the gal asked for 35 Baht.

Any sign of whether taxis will be allowed to drop off at the airport or at the bus station? The former opens a possibilty of a departures work-around a'la Don Muang; the latter and we're screwed.

Taxis willl drop off at departures of the new airport. Here is a link to a discussion fourm with many threads about Nong Ngu Hao Airport - some people call it Suvarnabhumi. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showforum=105 It includes threads of travel logistics for the move, Air Asia flying all their flights from the new airport on Sept 25, transportation details and much much more. Take a look.

Thanks CG. It looks like there will be potential for a DM-style taxi-from-departures work-around, providing the powers-that-be don't somehow block access. My excuses would be "Want to visit shops/favourite cafe in departures" and, if stopped from catching taxi outsde departures: "left passport at hotel, must go back quick-quick!" 8^) Now we need a map of the interior of the terminal to help our intrepid pioneers find their way... From the photos it looks like departures access is between arrival doors A and C.
