Quote: from Thin White Duke on 6:21 am on Sep. 10, 2006 My gripes about China Air could go on for pages, suffice it to say I've come that close to punching out a couple of air-clowns in the past, on general principle violations, and for being complete and utter racist bastards in particular.
Very, very odd, since I have NEVER encountered this.
Quote: from Thin White Duke on 6:21 am on Sep. 10, 2006 Flight attendants have, in the past bent over me to serve the Chinese person without an excuse me or anything, have laughed in my face when my tv console was broken, and otherwise engaged in all manner of passive aggressive bullshit.
Very odd, and (again) I have never encountered this. Flight attendants on CI have always been friendly, forthcoming, helpful. Sometimes chatty, sometimes not, but NEVER even close to what you describe -- on occasion, I encounter a slightly grumpy one, having a bad day (or maybe dealing with a trouble passenger), but that's part of life, and more like an exception.
Quote: from Thin White Duke on 6:21 am on Sep. 10, 2006 My policy with China Air has been on these delightful flights, has been to make damn sure the attendant light goes on at approximately the same time the flight attendant who just turned off the previous one I lighted is as far away as possible. A couple hours worth of this with my shit eating smile for "extra ice", "another blanket", a "cup of noodles", and on and on, gets my point across.
I think w just figured out why you are being treated that way, if that is how you treat them. Flight attendants have a great means of dishing out Karma at 39,000 feet. Why are you being such an ass to them?

"-Thin. _________________________________________________ Daffy, this is the paragraph above the one you just quoted. Where's the mystery dude? I've turned on the "pest mode" only when warranted by rude, insolent behavior initiated by the attendant, ie the behaviors listed above. Daffy, you know me, and I try not be make a pest of myself, though nor do I suffer fools and idiot's, or beautiful yet assinine flight attendants easily. I could tell you story after story of flying on this airline, and CONSISTANTLY racist behavior on the part of the staff, but suffice it to say, I've made my little point, and shit, the fact is if I hated it so much, I'd just pay more and fly some other carrier......like EVA, or Cathay...... Don5252- Last May I think it was about 980.00USD with taxes, for economy. Don't take my comments wrong guys, I've had decent service in general by China, and regard this carrier as higher in customer service than say Delta, or Northwest, but I just get a little annoyed from time to time with overt and passive racist behavior. I am, Daffy, the totallyest wrong guy that smelly Chinese dude wants to take cuts in front of..........

TWD, I do know you, and you are certainly not the kind of guy that would instigate the kind of behavior you describe, but to be honest, I've flown CI nearly a dozen times in the past 3 years, and have not experienced any such treatment, nor seen anyone be treated that way (well, except for the one time a CI stewardess YELLED at some dumb Chinese passenger, after he got up the third time, after being told to sit down, during taxiing upon arrival). Switching into pest mode after such behavior will have very little effect - what my Dad always suggested was to very politely ask for a complaint form, and to ask for the main purser, or chief stewardess -- to ask about what address, and where to send your unfortunate complaint to. I never had to do that, but my Dad having been a senior commercial pilot would know how to work the system (and get 150kg of excess baggage checked in with no problems jj cali - totally disagree with you regarding the CI staff, but not entirely disagreeing with you regarding the behavior of most mainland Chinese on such flights -- but I just took EVA on my most recent trip, and experienced worst behavior from (Chinese) passengers than on prior trips with China Airlines. Notable were the group (4 rows) of Chinese peasants that decided to roaringly and very loudly chat across all their rows during lunch, and (again) the guy that seemed confused about how lavatory doors work (i.e. when I'm inside and the red symbols are on the door, you can't get in by rattling forcefully on the door), and who tried to force his way in the moment I so much as cracked open the door - asshole! I won't even mention the usual assortment of idiots to get up as soon as the plane so much as has touched down, only to be herded back into their seats, twice, by the combined stewardesses... The passenger next to me tried to explain to me "They don't understand...", to which my reply was "Well, if they don't understand the announcement in Cantonese, in Chinese, English, and can't understand the little lit symbols, then maybe they should continue tending fields and pick lice out of their asses..." Oddly, that earned me some stern looks from the folks that pretended to not speak any English... weird.

i've traveled with CI atleast 6 times within the past 3 years and the only trouble I get is from PASSENGERS, not staff although, one time a attendant "accidentally" spilled coffe on me during the flight to BKK (cold coffee luckily) got compensated drycleaning, money for a new shirt, upgraded seat on my return...oh yes and the attendant's name and cell ## the force was strong with me on that day!

Daffy, your last paragraph captures the gist of this discussion perfectly. In preparation for the olympics, in addition to a major makeover in Bejing, a concerted and expensive undertaking to teach manners to the population is being conducted. Common rude, yet somehow accepted behaviors such as picking ones nose in public, cutting the line, or que, coughing without covering the mouth, and expressions of politness, such as "excuse me", I'm sorry, etc are now being taught through a government ministry. the government has identified the problem at a societal level. I believe the listmous test of common decency is waiting patiently in line. We'll see if the efforts of the Chinese pay off.

They have their work cut out for them, literally. Trying to correct over 50 years of deliberate removal of good manners (because 'manners', to the Communists, were 'bourgeois' and associated with the former ruling classes) in a few years, just because they want to save face for the Olympics is a joke - most (intelligent) Chinese asked about this matter agree that China should have started this 20 years ago, to be successful... but, like all things by our Chinese friends, this is just another smokescreen, meant to just patch an issue temporarily. I predict that, in the end, they will barely 'clean up' the actual location of the Olympic Games (mostly by draconian, last minute, enforcements), and any efforts will be abandoned right after the games are over - though there will undoubtedly many fun anecdotes surfacing.
