Yes, this is true, although the majority of the 1 baht coins get rejected and you have to reinsert them over and over, which can lead to a buildup of increasingly annoyed people waiting behind you. If you give the coin a little "backspin" as you put into the slot, most of the time the machine will catch it.

Did the prices of the BTS go up? I recently noticed a 1-stop was 15b, didn't it used to be 10b before?

Yes, they went up... the maximum is still 40 baht though.

Farangs annoying Thais... Umm, they probably never stood at an ATM behind a Thai with five different accounts, or one who still doesn't understand the working of an ATM after using it 500 times...

BTS Sky SmartPass
===============

I was thinking of getting a BTS Sky SmartPass (stored value card) on my next trip, to save the hassle having to first queue for change at the BTS Service Counters, then queue again at the ticket machines. Can be a real hassle especially at busy times. Have used the Oyster Card in Hong Kong for travelling on public transport and found it really worthwhile.

Anyone have any experience or useful tips in using the BTS Sky SmartPass?

Can the card be used on the MRT as well as BTS?

Yep I get one every trip (maybe I dont need to?) but they are great when I finally get around to this last holiday field report failing to use the ST started an unfortunate chain of events.

You cant use the same card on the MRT or you could not last year but thats an easy system to use also.

Jolly Rog - Have been using the same stored BTS Card for a few years now. It really does eleviate the need for queuing or finding those horrible coins every journey. I normally put on 500 Baht each time I visit BK and just top up another 500 Baht when the card is nearly empty. I think the card has 5 years shelf life, and after that you will have to buy a new card. I think the journeys are also a touch cheaper when you use the pre-paid card. It is so easy I really cannot understand the people who queue up for the machines all the time ?

I have both the BTS and MRT cards and I just top them off with B200 when I arrive. Lately I seem to be using the MRT more often than I used to.

Saves you a lot of time which you already stated the reasons. I use them so I can just go right in, especially useful at very busy stations like National Stadium where the line to the ticket machine are ridiculous.

most Thais live day-to-day so they would never think to get a pre-paid card
especially the students. They are probably given a set amount of money per day & thus have to get in line with everyone else

but if you see a Falahng doing it, he's either new to the system or he's just not having a clue

I am not particular new to the BTS or have no clue but I never have used a prepaid card.

I usually never know when I'll use the BTS, but when I do I always have money on me although I never wear a wallet.
Just simply hate to carry all these cards around (CC, ATM, BTS, MRT etc....).

But even at busy stations like Asoke the wait is always short.

I don't use the BTS that much (I only top up the card every 3-4 months), but having the card definitely saves time, the only silly thing here is having to have two cards and not being able to use the BTS/MRT cards for the busfares just like in Singapore.
