I generally pick up a prepaid BTS card when I'm in town, as you can't beat the convenience it provides - in fact, I usually carry two of them around, so that if I have someone with me, I don't have to wait either. Considering how cheap they are, it's a worthwhile investment.

matta, how did you use the skycard for the MRT too? My thai gf told me they are working on trying to do this now but it is not done yet. Two other friends from Thailand also told me that they are not aware of that feature.

Sorry if I wasn't clear - I carry both cards, one for BTS and one for the MRT.

that's a good idea, I usually took a cab though, as my place was a long walk from the Skytrain

Thanks for all your helpful replies. I intend to get a BTS Sky SmartPass (stored value card) on my next trip. I use the MRT much less than the Sky Train, so will probably not bother to get a pre-paid card for the MRT. Perhaps if I start visiting the soapies up at Rachadapisek I will use the MRT more often. Because of the steep fall in the value of the Pound, funds are likely to be tight this trip, so I do not want to put additional temptations my way. Maybe, next time.

I purchased a BTS Sky Smartpass on my recent trip to Bangkok. It was so convenient to use and a great time saver. On both my first and second journey’s using the card, a train was already pulling in, just as I got to the top of the escalator. I knew then that the card was the right way to go, this luck didn’t last of course. It surprised me how much I spent on the Skytrain, I had to top up several times. I should have followed Romeland’s example and topped the card up to 500 Baht when I bought it. Thanks to all for your advice. I have already added the card to my packing list for my next trip.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 3 June 2009 :- Airport Link further delayed ===================== The first trial run of the new airport rail link has been postponed another three-and-a-half months, transport deputy permanent secretary Thawalrat Ornsira told the cabinet on Wednesday The trial was scheduled for Aug 12, which is Mother's Day. However, the contractors had advised they would not be able to complete the work by that date. So the first run had been rescheduled for Dec 5, or Father's Day, His Majesty the King's birthday. Under the contractual agreement, building of the 28km route from downtown Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi must be completed by November. It was now expected that the Airport link, which connects Phaya Thai and Makkasan areas to the international airport, would enter service in March next year, Mr Thawalrat said. The State Railway of Thailand has said the fare will be 150 baht for passengers taking non-stop trains, and between 15 and 45 baht for trains that stop at every station.

so like always hit the tourist up for 3 times the regular fare, since they will take the non stop probably ! No matter as it does not connect directly with the BTS anyway, so whats the point of taking it.....

It does connect to the MRT, which in turn connects to the BTS, so it's not as useless as you might think. Makkasan is directly connected to Petchburi MRT, which is only 1 stop away from BTS Asoke. The convenience of speed (the main purpose of this new route) justifies a higher price. Commuters can also take the train as it has a good number of stops in the city. It's only fair that fares for a a commuter train are lower. But if you have a lot of luggage, the taxi is still the best way to go.

Being that a considerable number of flights come in after midnight, it's pointless figuring out the MRT/BTS connections to this train.
