I just got a fare alert: SFO-BKK, $687 total, China Air, Runs through April. Available on Orbitz or Travelocity. The best Eva fares are under HOT-E-FARE and you need to sign up for their Evergreen Club to get 'em. wj

I travel from New York to Asia 12 times a year. I only use Cathay Pacific. Their fares are competitive, but the service is exceptional. In addition, I am a Marco Polo Diamond member (traveling 120,000+per year). Thus I am usually upgraded to business class 90% of the time. That means, I pay between $1,000-1,200 per/rt ticket and get upgraded to a $7,000 ticket. A very good deal for those of you who do a lot of traveling.
Cathay also has very good lounges (especially in Hong Kong) and this makes the trip easier for guys like me who sometimes work all day and fly by night.
I do suggest that whenever you travel or stay in hotels try and give your business to the same establishments. Over time (especially in a bad economy) they will upgrade you and treat you beyond the fare or rate you are charged. Not rocket science, but simply my personal experiences.

Good advice, Pegasus. If you must fly economy, Cathay is the way to go because of their fixed-back seats. This means that nobody can recline into you, which is great for a big dufus like me with long legs. Cathay has always been competitively priced also. Just over $900 for LAX-BKK in April.
But then, if EVA's premium economy was only $200 to $300 more, I would definitley splurge for more leg room (38 inch seat pitch).

Daffy, I think that prices will come down even further in the short term. I flew last week from H K to JFK on Cathay. They upgraded me and business class was 1/2 full. This was shocking to me as Cathay is always full in business class. There are 56 B/C seats, and the price is a pretty solid $6,000 + (from H K). This is their real money maker. Economy was fully booked (not unusual because of all the elderly and very young Chinese traveling between China and the U S). But, if business class is so empty, it means that this caliber of traveler is not flying and they will probably lower their fares through special promotions to fill up these seats. In the long run prices might not come down dramatically because if business really comes down they will cut back on the quantity of flights per/day.
Either way, now seems to be a good time for travel, with reduced rates for airfare and upgrades available for Hotels. Last week in BKK I was given a suite for the price of the least expensive room. The hotel was running at 40% versus a usual 97% occupancy. We are in for some rough business times.

Good for you! In all the years of traveling to Asia (over 150 R/T), I have never even come close to joining what we call "THE MILE HIGH CLUB". I guess, because I rarely travel with a companion. It would not be very exciting doing this 'alone'. On one flight several years back I observed in first class a very famous Japanese movie star (who of course I never heard of ) "making out" with the flight attendant. I guess they also have fantasies (even if it might cost her, her job)
