I like the new airport...
upon arrival I pulled a "newbie" and the wife and I went outside where a young guy (mid twenties) was standing in front of newer volvo and quoted us 700baht to suk...I new on meter it would be around 250....so I just said 500 and you pay tolls...he accepted and off we went..he even popped in a LOSO CD to make my first half hour back in BKK a memorable ride 
....our departure last Saturday we arrived way too early...no traffic and first in-line to check in...
...after checking bags and going thru security I hung out at a bar and had a few....from what I remember it wasnt as overpriced as most airports...of course when I get my credit card bill I may be singing a different song

I would think that like me most posters would much prefer to pull a BG
Unless of course your "newby" was a newby BG

UPDATE:
I've been through the new airport a few times in the past few months. Every time, morning, afternoon and evening, there were a number of taxis waiting at Departures after dropping people off. No problems whatsoever, just pick out a nice new one and tell him to use the meter. No lines, no waiting, Meter fare to Suk 175-205 depending on traffic. This is the fastest, cheapest and best way out of the new airport, and as BK said, the more people that do it, the more it encourages taxi drivers to take people to the new airport on the meter, as they will be able to get a return fare.

I went through King Power airport a couple of weeks ago and was surprised to see King Power don't just have the duty free concession, they have the concession for everything it appears. Their name is on top of all the tops - thai writing, upper right hand corner of the shop. Amazing Thailand.
And it was interesting to note a number of pax wanting to get into the departure lounge however the staff advised they were not allowed to open them. So everyone went back to spend some baht's in the King Power shops.
And the departure level has severe hot spots. The cold air flows to the lower levels. I asked one of the waitresses and she agreed it was hot but noted it was a hot day outside.

Don't mean to be rude, but when you guys say 'meter', do you say it as though you were bargaining, or quite assertively? I sort of say 'Airport, meter, na kap' and get in. On the very few occasions the driver doesn't turn it on, I point it at with one hand, smile, and repeat 'metre, na kap?'. If he says *anything* at this point (they normally turn it on, either with a smile to say 'I was just about to', or quite reluctantly), I say 'meter' with my hand on the door handle, as if I am about to get out.
works more or less every time. though I haven't tried going to the new airport, which is why I am asking - is this a case of them seeing you as greenish tourists, or is it that they really are very reluctant to take the trip.
As I say, no offense intended - just interested in interpreting your experiences.

Some do not want to take the trip for whatever reason. No return fare at that time of day, getting off work soon, would rather to short runs to make more money. And some want to make more money because they believe that they can charge more for this route. Also, there are some times in the day that going to the airport is very inconvenient for the driver, as he will be stuck in traffic one-way or both ways.
Every taxi driver knows the word "meter". If I am going anywhere in Bangkok, if the driver will not put the meter on, I will not go. This rarely happens as I ask if the driver wants to go there before getting into the taxi. If he says yes, the use of the meter is assumed and 99% of the time he will just switch it on.
Going to the airport, I see if he wants to go. If so, I tell him meter. Some do, some quote another price. If they quote something else, I either don't use him or if I cannot wait, I just say something like 200 or 250. If he says no, then I just get another taxi. Sometime it takes a few tries. Rudeness or aggressiveness will never help you in my experience.

By the way, I am seldom rude or aggressive, and never so in Thailand.... But I DID find that fewer and fewer taxi drivers insisted on no meter the longer I was there - and I think it is due to to my being more assumptive after a while.
