when I fly into BKK, I will go directly to koh Samui. Can anyone give me the lowdown on security at BKK airport. Will i have to change terminals, I will be flying in from hong kong. I need to know how much time to allow btween my arrival and departure time. I'll be on the last leg of chicago-LA-HK-BKK-KS, so i don't want to schedule it later than i need to, but not cut it too close. poskat

Hi poskat, I assume you'll go to KS by Bangkok Airways connection flight? However it's the same for Thai domestic flights... You'll arrive from HK in terminal 1 or 2 of the Bangkok International Airport, in front of both you'll find the busstop for a free transfer to the Domestic Terminal where your flight leaves. To calculate the transfer time: Upon arrival you'll have to pass Immigration first to get your tourist visa on arrival. That part can go quickly - but it may last a long time if only few counters are open and the passengers have to wait. My experiences vary from 5 minutes to 20 minutes, calculate 20 minutes from arrival at those counters to be on the safe side. From the plane to immigrations it can take up to 10 minutes. So we have 30 minutes already. After immigrations you take your luggage, the belts are near by, shouldn't cause a time problem under normal circumstances. You pass the customs, and if they don't check you (never happend to me) and if your luggage is there it should take you just 5 minutes to reach the busstop in front of the terminal. Depending on the bus it can take up to 10 minutes till bus arrival and from Terminal 1 again 10 minutes to reach the Domestic Terminal. So far 55 minutes... At the Domestic Terminal add the time for check-in. The Bangkok Airways check-in to KS is on the ground floor, you'll leave the bus on the 1st floor level. That's it. Have to add that you can do it faster, but I am not sure about that, not if you want to be safe IMHO. What I don't know: Can they check your luggage through to KS from an international flight?? I am not sure about that but I guess that no? And don't forget to add some time for admiring the thai stewardesses (All mentioned times don't consider extra- APEC security measures that might take place???) Grtx Tom

Last time I went to KS, came in to terminal 1 then had to clear immigration collect baggage, clear customs etc. then take it on to the bus to the domestic terminal and check in again. Since the flight to KS is purely domestic (from BKK) and there is no further customs/immigration checks at KS, I see no way this could have changed even though it has been a while since I made this trip myself. The whole process is very similar to flying into a US city then on to another destination within the US. Be aware that BKK Airways have (did have) very low weight limits for check in which quite often do not tally up with your international checki in limits. They were quite lax on the return from KS, but on the outbound journey insisted that I pay extra for my excess baggage. Also given the aircraft types used (mainly ATR's I think) there is little luggage stowage on board the BKK Airways flights.
