well i'm a newbie 2 days now and dont see anything about talks on cheap flights there or webpages mentioning it, iv'e been searching for a trip in jan or nov, and the cheapest i found on expedia.com was around $850.00 with a stop in germany for about 3 hours leaving out of california, so i guess my question to frquent travelers there and to advance (and newbies if you know)is that the norm for travel there? if you have some links that offer cheaper flights please hit me back with them, thanks

Hey Bad... check Cathay Pacific USA. They are always having specials. I booked with them and leaving in September. JFK-HKG-BKK-JFK. You can also spend a couple of days in Hong Kong which I would recommend. Total USD 750.00 and it includes all taxes. This is a good deal. If you live in the east coast CP has a daily flight out of JFK. Leaves around 11.00pm. They also have flights from LA and SF. Singapore Airlines out of Newark and JFK. One stop in Amsterdam or Frankfurt then stop in Sinagapore. Too many stops and no specials at this time. Another options is Thai Airways. They have no east coast flights but I know they leave from LAX. If you buy the ticket from an agency in Thailand they are cheaper. You pay with your credit card in THB and they fed ex the ticket to you for USD 15.00. I just bought a side trip ticket from them to India and called Thai Airways USA. My reservation is confirmed. If you want to leave from the east coast then Thai would put you on a Lufthansa flight out of Newark or JFK and then Thai from Frankfurt. I am not too sure about the prices. Do not fly on US carriers for long haul flights. They are stingy with seat space and you will be cramped in. Now with the budget cuts they will serve you half a glass of Coke and no more. Hope this helps.

badboy5805, I also booked Cathay Pacific for my upcoming stay in September (next week!). Same price as Jersey, booked one month in advance, leaving out of California. The price fluctuated a lot during the week I booked it (lowest was almost $700 USD) but I couldn't commit timewise on that one, so when I did, it had popped back up to $750. Cathay Pacific is a good airline with a good saftey record, and polite staff (my experience so far). You can get cheaper fares through Taiwanese and Korean airlines, but their track record is spottier and safety records not as good. - Balls

I can definitely vouch for Cathay. Great airline, and right now an extremely good price from New York. I'm flying out of JFK to BKK in about 2 weeks on Cathay... One thing that I found out is that the HK stopoever makes the price go from $750 to $1000. Not sure if it is like that all the time... Personally, I would stay away from the Korean and Taiwanese airlines (although some people said they like China Air..go figure..).

badboy5805 I always do the Cathay Pacific California-HK-BKK route, and still get prices in the $700's. You need to find a travel agent that is or has access to a consolidator (a "bucket shop"). My agent can't get me those prices directly, but works with her consolidator out in NYC to do this. So don't expect to pay $1000+ just because they route you through HK. The only time I paid $1000 on Cathay Pacific was when I booked one week in advance, so I could hook up with a friend in HK, and continue on with him to BKK. BTW, flew China Air (Taiwanese) last time (May 2002). Planes were old, staff was trying, but food was terrible and the airport in Taipei pales in comparision to the efficiency at HK (I remember thinking, as the aged 747 lumbered into the sky, about the exploding fuel tank problem -- the FAA has concluded that one can expect these old planes to explode at a rate of 1 every 5 years). Plus most people in HK are bi-lingual (English/Cantonese) so you can always ask questions if you have a problem. So I'll pay the extra $100 and stick with the Cathay Pacific experience. Good luck! - Balls

Just to clarify, Cathay is only $1000 if you STOP in HK. All the flights go through HK and if your destination is BKK you get the flight in the $700(ish) range. I just booked it from New York for $750 for second week of September... No economy flight for 28 hours is good, ok? But Cathay is as passible as it gets. Far better than most American airlines --- although I flew the new Continental flight direct from New York to Hong Kong and it was very good in economy (brand new 777 and only 16 hours to HK from NY). Cathay as decent planes, good service, and good safety record. While you might find the same on another airline, to get better I think you need to talk about business class...
