Hello,
I live in the USA and will be visiting BKK 1/19-2/1. In between my trip I want to go to Penang, Malaysia on 1/24 - 1/28 (these dates are not flexible). I've only found that Thai Airways flights direct once a day. When you visit their website you get a roundtrip fare of $208 US$, BUT...you can't buy an electronic ticket. You have to buy online and pickup your ticket in a city office, in Thailand, within 72 hours. While this seems a bit absurd to me, it's the rule. I called them and they even said so. My only option if I want a ticket in hand prior to my arrival is to buy in the US and that costs $350. Does anyone have any advice...I know that is considered high season. Do you think I should fork out the extra money now or take my chances and book when I arrive...which will only be 4 days before I want to go to Penang. I also know of a train but it's a 20 hour trip. Help...

I wouldrecommend the nighttrain actually.
Trains in Thailand are very goodand going overnight is a very good option:
1) you save on travel time;
2) you save on one night's accommodation.
There ae several classes. 2nd class is OK; 1st is more than OK.
Cheaper than flying, by far. 200 USD to get from BKK to Penang is really expensive when you consider the option of going by train.

Thanks...the only train I see is #35 that leaves BKK at 245pm getting in the next morning...is that the one you are referring too? I'm willing to pay the premium to get there in only an hour and a half by air but just not sure what my chances are of getting a flight a few days before...what do you think? Is the high season so busy that I won't have a chance?

My opinion is that if you leave it until the last minute, you're going to be sh_t out of luck. 24 January 2004 is a Saturday, and only two days after the Lunar/Chinese New Year on the 22nd. It's going to be a big travel day, I'd guess.
If you wish, send me a PM and maybe I can go pick up the ticket for you and drop it off to your hotel when you get to BKK.
Alternately, if you are traveling to BKK on one of Thai Airways partners with Star Alliance, you may be able to get a middling price on a ticket by adding it to your current itinerary. And I seem to recall that this is a codeshare flight with Malaysia Airlines: they aren't Star Alliance, but may have another affiliation or ticketing system you can use to your advantage.
Whatever you do, make sure you get there early for both flights. This flight lately has gotten a lot of extra security checkd sometimes.

VJ is right. Furthermore, there are a lot of travellers going to Koh Samui so the leg Bkk-Surat Thani is usually booked out long before.
You just might be lucky if people have returned their ticket for a refund at the last minute emptying up some seats.
Alternatively, you might try to get ANY seat in a Hat Yai bound train (more departures per day) and travel from Hat Yai to Penang by van. Around THB 200 and takes aprrox. 4 hours. Not too inconvenient.
Correct, tickets for flights can only be picked up from the city office (Silom) not at the airport office.

In case anybody ever needs to pick up a ticket from that Thai Airways office:
Get on SkyTrain and go to Chong Non Si station.
Now, presuming you are coming from the Siam interchange station, which being a Sukhumvit-based sex-tourist you probably are...
As you face the direction the train travels, you need to exit the station on the right hand side. After you're down on street level, walk in the same direction traffic is going and in about 4 or 5 minutes walking time you'll arrive at the Thai Airways office on the corner of a big intersection.
You would be correct if you assumed I got lost as f*ck the first time, too... : (

Thanks for the advice and the offer to pick the ticket up for me. Even if I could pay on this end they would want ID on that end to receive the ticket...all of this red tape is killing me. It looks like I'd better just blow the extra money to be safe.
