Hi all, I had an extra day last year and wanted to try to go do a return trip to Angkor Wat from Bangkok in a day. I had the logistics worked out. Early morning flight to Siem Reap getting in before 9am. The return flight was at 8 or 9 pm. This would have given me 10 or so hours in Cambodia. I decided not to try as the airfare was pricey, 9000+ Bt and it was my last day in Bangkok. I know people say that a couple of days or more is ideal. I am looking towards my next trip and am again running out of time so I was thinking over my old plans. I was wondering if anyone had done this trip in a day before?

stuckinapub, It is one place that I really want to check out but can never afford the time for a few days. A month goes by all too fast. I have friends in Hong Kong who fly over and we spend time on one of the islands. I think you are right, I will save it till I can do it properly. 20 rolls. Impressive. I will be digital this next trip, film was always taking up too much space. Thanks

I was in Angkor ten years ago, and spent 5 days there I think. Angkor Wat is nice but Angkor Tom, the old town next door, is even more impressive. 1 day at Angkor? Rushed job, pity.

My first trip to Ankor was circa 1990, about the time the Khymer Rouge were finally flushed out of the area. At that time the only access was via Phnom Penh, and there was very little accomodation to be had at Ankor. We probably had about 6 hours on the ground but my memories of that day are still vivid, even though I have made several return trips of longer duration. A local festival was being celebrated, and long processions of costumed Khymers wound around the complex... I shot at least 20 rolls, and vowed to make a return trip as soon as possible. The point of the story is that if you are lucky enough to have even one day at Ankor, you should seize the opportunity. Of course the temple complex is vast, and deserves several days of your time... but if you don't have "several" at your disposal you should put the one you do have to good use and go. The direct Bangkok Air flight is convenient and although it may appear a touch more expensive than some routes, it is good value given that the sights at Ankor are incomparable. And the longer you wait for your "several day" opportunity, the more the area develops and the larger the crowds of tourists become. Carpe diem... that would be my advice.

I spent 6 days in Cambodia earlier this mnth incl 3 in Siem Reap. I opted for the 1 day pass to Angor and was glad I did. Not because there isn't much to see; quite the opposite. I was just totally buggered from spending the day climbing up & down temples and the final straw, climbing a bloody big hill & yet another temple to see the sun set. The temple complexes of Bayon, Angor Thom and Angor Wat defy superlatives. I'm going back in March for a longer sortie. Beware of how steep & dangerous some of the steps up the various temples are. Also take plenty of local Riels to buy-off the hordes of "guides", touts and souvenier sellers. Everyone wants USDs which add up during the day.

God, you're right about those steps. Can't imagine how the kings ever climbed those. I walked up what was easily a 50-60 foor flight of steps in Angkor Wat, but it was coming down that was the scary part. Had to sit and move down slowly, step by step. Took me about 20 minutes. Embarrassing!

Thanks everyone, I might have to squeeze a couple of days out of my debauchery and check it out. If not this trip then definitely next. The place looks quite impressive. I find that I am adding a day or three to every trip, the time goes way too fast. herodotis

I booked a tour through the Tour folks in the lobby at Nana Hotel... I think it was for 3 days/2 nights. I ended up being the only one on the tour, so was able to choose where I wanted to spend more time or not (a private tour definitely the way to go)... I think a one day in/out would be kinda rough. You'd need to have a reliable driver/guide waiting for you and you will encounter a delay at the Siam Reap airport (i.e. the customs agents take their sweet time). As well as the time to get the proper ticket for Ankor, etc... Hope that helps... Cheers...

Hey I plan to go to Angor wat for a few days This trip. Anyone know of a good bucket Shop/travel agency for thai air in Bangkok? Trying to buy tickets here in the states costs out the *ss. A couple of years ago I used a shop on Sukumvit and got tickets to chang mai for less than half what the Thai air web site quoted. I tried to use them last trip but they were gone. I went to a different travel agency and in 5 days they never got it done. Any suggestions?
