Hello, I have read somewhere that if you take taxi from BKK airport upon arrival, there is a surcharge of B50; you can save this B50 by taking the escalator up to the departure hall and take any taxi that just drop off passengers. In addition, the taxi drivers may also ask you to take a toll way that cost about B70; it is recommended that you dont take it as its not much faster. Can anyone verify the truth of tha above mention? If it is correct, hopefully it benefit some brothers reading it. Thanks.

The first part is definitely true, the second part depends on the time of day, amount of traffic, where you are going and how fast the guy will drive. Also, besides saving the 50b service on the first part, at the taxi stand downstairs they will write an amount that should be the charge to your destination. Usually this is a little more than would be the actual meter. So just running the meter upstairs will save you some, too, so long as the guy's not got a dodgy meter.

Thanks a lot seubeu. For our benefit, can you kindly classify those peak hrs whereby its more worth to take the toll way?

seubeu, I have found just the opposite to be true. I have never had the taxi desk write a price to a destination, and upstairs, the police have actively chased emptied taxis away when they were about to pick up fares there. Also, because at the taxi stand they DO keep a log of the cab under the receipt number, it serves as a deterrent to the nastier scams that the drivers used to pull. 10 years ago, I would have agreed, but now, to me, it no longer makes much sense. For me, walking up to a taxi, putting my bag in and heading off to the relief of my bed and whoever might share it, doesn't need to be delayed by playing taxi-dodgem upstairs. 50 extra baht for a hassle-free ride to the Promised Land is cheap enough... haam sup

Yep, I agree with haam sup. never had a problem downstairs, no one wrote a price on the ticket and the 50 baht ( a dollar and a bit?) is negligible. Not worth the drag upstairs. Plus the police upstairs do try to give hassle. Busy hours in BKK. ALWAYS. Traffic hell. Deep hell from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm.

it is actually more the opposite nowadays! the last times i went upstairs because there was a to long queue downstairs the guys both times refused to put on the meter and were haggling for an extra price. so i was sitting in a taxi with 3 pieces of luggage and had to change taxi in the middle of the highway on the way to downtown because this taxi bastard was trying to rip off with thb 400 for the ride! better be safe and happy and take the taxis at the arrival hall!

....I think your best bet is to make your queue in front of the airport taxi service counter and pay the surcharge of B/.50. No rip-off and you get the assurance that he will take you to your hotel/apartment without any problems.... Forget about going upstairs. Those freelancers are there for seconds only cos the hard enforcement of the NO PARKING (long time) policy in front of the departures gate. You may find difficult to manage your troley with several pieces of luggage waiting to get any available cab in there. Just make your queue downstairs and enjoy the ride....

Some clarification: 1) it's been about 1 year since I last did this , so can certainly be out of date. 2) Before that, I lived in Samut Prakarn, and they did write a fare of about 350B on the ticket. If late and no traffic then it was about a 265B fare. Significant difference although I would usually just anyway pay 350 or maybe even more, since there are no fares back to town from where I lived and I could get reimbursed anyway. One time the guy was a schmuck, though, so I just paid him face meter value plus the 50b charge. 3) When I have caught taxis upstairs, it's usually been late at night, not so many cops but plenty of guys just arriving for their late flight back to farangland. I wait for a taxi that looks decent and just hop in as the other guy is getting out. One key is to travel light, when possible. 4) There is no #4. 5) Anybody have a good answer for when to take the highway and when to take the ground roads? I generally prefer the highway, so usually ask to go this way. To me it seemed the worst traffice was usually from about 8-8:30 am until about 7-9 pm, with maybe a bit of a break in early mid afternoon, but it could vary out by the airport.

JackRabbit present... I sign "take from arrival hall." I stop to the hotelbooth , reserve my Htl there , and walk outside for a cigarette and a taxi. Easy , just shoo the "Hotel , Sir ? , Taxi , Sir ?"-guys to their way. All You need to do is tell the girls in the taxibooth is the name of Your Htl and jump in a taxi. My flights arrive in the early morning around 0600 , so I always tell the driver to take the highway. Record from airport to Ambassador 27 min. Worst time , when there was no highway , 2 h 30 min in heavy traffic. JR
