This has always been an official requirement. The question is, has the environment changed so that you are more likely to be stopped and are they more likely to haul you in if you only have the copy to show them. But I think having a photocopy with the entry date stamped would be far preferable than one without. Also, a color photocopy.

Where would one find color photocopy service in the Sukhumvit or Patpong area?

Not all regular police can check on your immigration status in your passport. (Eventhough they will do this...) It is merely an ID check they can perform. Only 1 division (division 3 - immigration police?) can actually check on your visa. Regular police can check and hand you over but they are not able to charge you for immigration offences. (You can simply refuse showing more than ID part of your passport..... but you never know...TIT)

Carry a photocopy, including the TM card and the page showing when you were stamped into the country. The passport belongs to the country it was issued by, it does not belong to a person.

My old man gave me the following bit of advice. Society gives a policeman a gun, club and the authority to use it on you. Be smart do what a cop tells you to do or you will get the feces beat out of you. I can just imagine a punter with the language barrier trying to tell a Thai cop the finer points on immigration law. Be smart carry your passport with you and leave a copy back in your room. This a pussy forum not the legal aid society.

There is no farking way I am carrying my passport for a night on the town. Just one more thing to lose. Never been asked for it in 12 years. I think only a certain type of individual is stopped and asked for papers. Suspicious looking and/or those hanging around in drug prone environments/bars. Or that piss drunk guy I saw flashing his cock at TGs at about 4am between soi 11 and 13. ( Take a bow you wanker) Most others should be safe.

griffin lives in BKK and has been checked 3 times. Smart money says carry your passport unless Krypto has a speed of light bail bond service.
