Am starting to plan my 2nd visit to the LOS, and was curious if there are any dates that are really bad to visit? I seem to recall that on certain holidays everything closes up, so any help in avoiding those dates would be great!

No day is bad in Thailand so dont let that worry you....... hay last year I was there on the kings birthday will no beer allowed to be sold.........
Ya right all they did was rip the lables off the bottles and it was business as normal................ just have fun.

Songran in April is 7 days in Pattaya being soaked day and night. I will never be in Thailand for this again. What a pain in the ass.

Songkran can be a pain..especially if they put talcum powder in the water they splash at you. I tell you...when it dries, you'll look like you've been working in a baby formula factory or something. But it can be fun too. In 1994, I ganged up with some friends in Songkhla. We took a water pump, two barrels of water, onto the back of this pick-up and started spraying everyone by the road side.

Songkran for the first time can be fun; it soon becomes a nightmare for many of us.
Especially Pattaya where it starts on the evening of the 12th of April until the late hours of the 19th.
Last year I made a big mistake, landed BKK on the 18th, stayed overnight in BKK and on the next day, the 19th went to book a taxi, I had intended to go as early as possible but was expecting to be advised that no taxi would go near the place until after 21:00hrs, quite the opposite, I was told there would be no problem so I left BKK midday as I could not get a late checkout.
In less than 2 hours I had reached Pattaya, well the sign that say” welcome to Pattaya”, than we barely moved, took 5 hrs to reach Jomtien, we came to a stand still, nothing was moving, his mobile had been very busy for some time, he was telling me that there were big problems, people were waiting for taxis to the airport and as the taxis could not get to there hotels they were missing flights.
my taxi driver decided to go past Jomtien and come up from the south, some how with no traffic coming the other way the drives going north decided to use the unused traffic lanes, what had happened was that the traffic coming south on Jomtien Beach road had done the same, so somewhere in the middle was 4 lanes of traffic facing each other, TIT (This Is Thailand)
So I had to walk the last 2 miles with 40Kg of gear and every "Richard Head" throwing water over me.
I will never make that mistake again; this year I leave Thailand in the early hours of the 12th.
Having water thrown at you is not too unpleasant when it is hot like Thailand, where the problem is when they put ice in it, particularly if the ice has not melted.

The bars close on election day and many of the major holidays so maybe try to avoid those.
Songkran is horsesh*t -- avoid it at all costs.

bars on election day only close if they do not have connections, I have never not been able to get a drink on any holiday, inc kings and queens birthday.
the bars that can get away with serving do so but they do turn the music off and keep all bins behind the bar, just my experience.

i've read someone in another forum advise not to go to pattaya during the annual cobra gold maneuver.
Not wanting to offend anyone in military service here, but i'm curious.
Maybe someone here can elaborate on their experiences during that time?
