distance is about 20 kms. -  taxi fare not more than Baht 150.00. however, taxis cannot go through pratunam area (bus lane only) if you're coming from din daeng - so the driver will certainly take some alternative routes (which will increase the fare) - better take an Airport bus and walk a little if you prefer since once in pratunam you will never miss the baiyoke tower

No one will go to Pratunam less then for 200 Bath. Tell the driver to go through Phayathai road, or get down from express way to Phetchaburi road. He can turn left straight to Ratchaprapor, and get to Bayok.

Blade is correct. Less than 150 on the meter, plus tollway, the street is Rachaprarop, get out before the taxi is forced to turn left at Makkasan just past the railroad tracks. Then stroll 100 m to the Hotel Indra and you are at Pratunam Market.

Going the roundabout way so you can get out on Petchburi Road will just cost you (a little) more money but will waste a lot of time, twice as long in the stinking traffic at the Victory Monument and Phya Thai Rd.

We are talking meter taxis here, so talk of a negotiated 200 baht rate is moot. Any taxi with a meter that tries to charge you anything but the meter fare is breaking the Thai law that they passed to justify the introduction of the meters, and ought not to get your custom. Get another taxi.

The exception is a radio taxi that you called in, they deserve the extra 20 baht.

Arguing over a 50 baht ($1.20) difference in the fare is bootless. That's a sure sign of being here too long...however, taxi drivers who want to jerk us around over a flat fare when they have a meter, irk me, and let me say why.

When I arrived here there were no meters, all fares were negotiated BEFORE getting in.

Bangkok at least had previously tried the meter system not once but TWICE and the drivers demanded a return to flat negotiated fares each time.

So now the drivers (or maybe the owners and syndicates) insisted succesfully and got meters back in and a big rate hike (big by local standards)

So now when a driver wants to toss all that out of the sindow and break the Thai law and demand a flat fare, I say to hell with him.  The plight of the hard working taxi driver is one thing, offset by abusive drivers who prey on tourists and tax-mafias like the one at Patpong.

The plight of the consumer (Thai, farang, expat, tourist alike) is something else and since I happen to fall within the second group, I side with my own.

Drivers who never have change (supposedly.) Drivers who stay out of fast moving lanes and love to change 3 lanes to go sit behind a smoke belching bus that never moves...how many times have we all been in the Taxi from Hell?  Radio or tape deck blaring loud Issan music at painful decibel levels. Windows decorated with all sorts of silly shit that impedes the driver's vision.

Don't get me wrong, Thai taxis are one of the world's few remaining real bargains, but all taxi drivers are not created equal.

We use radio taxis and are very happy with them, we use them enough that the dispatcher knows us and we have made friends with a few of the drivers. These cabs are clean, the driver courteous and competent. It really is well worth 20 baht plus meter for the comfort and convenience compared to walking 400 m out to the soi and flagging down some hack that might be driven by Pol Pot's nephew who knows Phnom Penh very well but hasn't a frigging clue about Bangkok.

Yup, That fare is about right.  By the way, the Bayoike sky is great, the suites are not.  If you are staying in the suites I would suggest you switch
