Guys
I will be in LOS again next month. Possibly I will need to make a two day trip into Vietnam.
I could apply by post here in UK for a Vietnamese visa, but I don't want to be without my passport since I am told it could take a while.
Does anybody know if it is possible to go to the Vietnamese embassy in BKK and get a visa "over the counter" I did this before without problem in Hong Kong, but would welcome any advise about the situation in BKK.

A friend of mine got his Vietnam visa in BKK in about 5-6 working days; not sure if an over-the-counter service is available for a price premium but I could ask. As for getting a visa upon arrival in HCM City, I don't know anyone who has gone that route but it is supposedly possible. Check out http://www.roughguides.com. The Vietnam visa section covers a couple of tour companies that can work that angle with you.
Me, I just went through the drama of sending my passport off to the Vietnam embassy in Washington, D.C. and having it lost in the mail for over a week on its way back to me. My passport is back in my hands now, though, and I don't think it will be leaving my possession any time soon... 
I have a question for you about entry into Vietnam myself: my visa is valid for 30 days. Do I need to enter the country at the beginning of that window or does any entry date work?

When I checked the Vietnamese Embassy site in UK, the suggestion is that the 30 day visa lets you enter any time after your proposed entry date. Also, visas can be extended for another 30 days "in larger towns" in Vietnam.
I sent email to Vietnamese embassy in BKK to ask about "over the counter" visas, but no reply yet. I will be moving around a lot on next trip, and can't really cater for a 5/6 day spell wihout passport.
I have had a similar problem to yours regarding lost or delayed in post. Result was I had to run around changing flights etc.. Not fun, so I am reluctant to send my passport by post when I will need it in 5 days time.

30 day tourist visa for Vietnam:
1) 5 day service - about TB 1,800
2) Next day service - about TB 2,500
3) Same day (in early morning, back late afternoon) service - about TB 2,700
Vietnam embassy is on Wireless Road next to the Athenee Plaza Hotel.
Visa validity date: The visa contains "valid from" and "expiry" dates. Exclusive of potential extensions, you just have to enter and leave within that window.

Unless there have been recent changes I would definately NOT attempt "Visa on arrival",, the Visa you would get would be,, you illegal capitalist pig,try to take over our country and if VERY lucky would be put on the next plane OUT.

I can't remember for sure but that sounds about right. I paid more because I got the travel agent to do it for me.
From what I remember that sounds like the price I was told it would cost me if I went and did it myself.
I agree with Mel Gibson I would make sure I have the visa before I get there.
Even if you can do visa on arrival my bet is it is going to take a long time and cost you a lot more then if you do it before you leave.

I can only confirm that there is no way to go to Vietnam without a pre-arranged Visa......arlines staff will not even allow you to board on the plane if your papers are not in order
It's possible to have a pre-authorized Visa to Vietnam in less than half day but can be done only through good travel agencies in Vietnam: they will get the approval from the Vietnamese Immigration Department and then send it over by fax or email to their representative in Thailand or anywherelse....
For your info, my company can provide such service...standard fee is 30us$

My first trip to HCM about six months ago I was in a line that seemed to stretch forever at immigration and right next to that was a counter where I thought people were congregating to get a tourist visa.
Visa for Vietnam takes 3 working days for HK$300 and next day service is HK$500. As most of the guys are saying, for peace of mind and no or less hassles, have the visa in the passport before you leave for Vietnam.
