Even though my next scheduled flight will be in October, I'm always keeping my eyes open for an earlier opportunity (like the Air Asiana $425 tickets).
Anyone know of any current specials coming down the pipe on inexpensive flights to BKK from Los ANngeles?

More like they are taking lessons from NEP bars... Yes, I agree, it's low season, though I suspect the Baht dropping in value versus the $$$ might encourage more folks to head over there.
I know, if the Baht hits 45, I'm going for a 4-day weekend (that is, if the flights stay reasonable.)

MHO--Don't see the dollar getting that strong in the near future although it has been picking up slowly.
Reason for high price air-line tickets: have you filled-up the tank in your car lately?? The cost of JP-4 has surely risen also. ls

If the price doubles or triples, it means that the discount tickets are sold out, and that sales are good (for the airline) on that flight. They might open up some more discount fares closer to flight time if sales lag behind and it does not appear that they will sell out.
Most airlines use sophisticated yield management systems that vary the number of discount seats available on a continuous basis right up until flight time to ensure maximum revenue.
The actual cost of the full fare tickets does not change that much, although it obviously has gone up some because of higher fuel prices.

Also consider that many flights to BKK from the US or EU have a stop-over point, so some of the stop-over flights are in cooler weather cities and popular summer destinations (Japan, etc.). Also, the return flight may be popular for people traveling to the EU and the US from Asia.

I noticed online yesterday that JAL (in their promo section) had SFO-BKK roundtrip for $728. Via Travelocity it was $1200+. I usually call my agent in SFO to get the best rates as I prefer to go with the carriers that have a reasonable safety record.

Travelocity uses the same reservation systems that travel agents use. Ticket prices are not fixed, and the number and prices of discount fares can change instantaneously, so it is hard to compare travel agents vs. Travelocity.
