First time going to LOS for two weeks and then I plan to visit India for a week, at least the Eastern part of India. Come back from India in a week or so and then go to Phuket for another week and then back home. I am not staying in Bangok for more than two weeks continously. Do I need any visa with an USA passport? My return flight is in the morning at 7AM. That means I have to be in the airport by 5AM. If I stay in Sukhumvit area, I need to start for the airport around 4AM. Is it possible to get a cab for the airport around that time in Sukhumvit area? I will be returning from Bangok on December 19. Is it safe to take a cab that early in the morning from Sukhumvit area to the airport? Thank you guys for all the informational posts here. I am reading as much as I can before I go for my first visit to Bangok and India. Already booked my ticket from LAX to BBK. A roundtrip ticket from BKK to CCU (India, Calcutta) is $450 if purchased in the USA. The same ticket by TA is $250 if purchased in Thailand. Should I buy the ticket here or buy it after I reach Thailand. I am afraid if tickets to CCU are sold out if I wait to purchase it in BKK. Please suggest.

what the f_ck you want in calcutta?? anyway, you can drin in sukhumvit area until the wee hours nowadays (on the street though). 4:30 am will be sufficient, it will take you no more than 25 minutes to the airport. and probably the only cars you see at that time are taxi meters, legions of them. so not to worry. rtb.

At that time, you can safely leave the Sukhumvit area around 4:30 like ringthebells has mentioned. I really think you can get in a taxi at 5:30am around the Nana/Sukhumvit area and make it easily. Checking in and then right to immigration with time to spare. But if you want to be safe 5am is easily ok also. There is no traffic to worry about at that early in the morning and you can skip the tollways too. I have had 8am flights and left at 6am and kicked myself repeatedly for leaving so early. You end up sitting in the airport with nothing to do. To each his own though.

As always, head down to the street if the hotel taxi stand quotes a high price. Last time I stayed at the Grace, the doorman quoted a price of 500B. Although it was 4 a.m., I had no problem finding a taxi on the street for a much cheaper rate, 200B or so.

Singapur1, No visa required for stays of less than a month for US citizens. 5:00 or 5:30 will be plenty of time. ÝArrive too early, and the check-in counter will be deserted. ÝCheck-in, pay the departure tax, immigration, go to the gate - pie! You didn't say where you were staying, but any MOVING taxi will be fine - just tell him to use the meter. ÝIf you are at a better hotel, tell the doorman to get you a METER taxi, and before you get in, tell him to use the meter - any problem, get another cab. ÝShould be 270 baht max, if you take the tollways...(including tolls) You will be safe at ANY time of day/night around Sukhumvit. As for purchasing the ticket to Calcutta: no crystal ball, but I think you will be OK if you take care of it as soon as you get to BKK. ÝIf you aren't at ALL flexible on dates/times, then of course you should buy it in advance. ÝShould be no problem getting to/from India from BKK. good luck, and enjoy. haam sup

You could get a cab at 6:30 am and get there with 20 mins to spare at that time of the day. Just get in, fasten your seat belt, and hang on. You will be lucky if you see the speedo go below 180K Catching a cab when they have an open road is a whole new experience.

Haam Sup is correct when he mentions having them turn on the meter. Some of the doormen are working with some metered taxis outfront. They will call their buddies in, and the driver will try to negotiate a fixed high fare. It happened to me, and I threatened to walk if he didn't turn the meter on. I prefer to get my own taxi. Most of the time when a cab driver is sitting in his car with his motor off or he is not even in the drivers seat, they aren't meter type of guys. You have to negotiate with them.

I like to leave very early for the airport since a missed flight could cost me over a thousand dollars. So my plan was to leave my Sukhumvit hotel at 4AM for a 7 AM flight. Turned out I didn't leave till about 4:30 and had plenty of time. Cabs are plentiful, make sure they use meter. At that time of morning there is no need to take the toll road but at most times of the day it's a good idea.
