It's not the cost, but the taste. Even the same brand, let's say the ubiquitous Marlboro, is not standard. Those sold in Asia, Europe, US, Middle East all have a different taste. I'm after the continuity.

Legally your allowed one carton. I have never been stopped by Thai custom's but I have seen others pulled aside and their bag's opened.

Vertigo is quite right as the big tobacco companies do vary the taste by region, my wife swears that Marlboro from USA do not taste same as Marlboro imported into LOS or even smuggled in from Sg etc.
One carton for sure, two maybe. As Thai Customs rarely stops random farang in Green Line, if you have 1 carton in a Duty Free bag, and a few more in your checked baggage, your odds of getting stopped are insignificant.

You should be ok with two, if you get your bags from the conveyor, just walk staight to the green line with your declairation slip stuck out in front of you. They'll take it without stopping you at all. Just like you know what you're doing there.

You can bring up to 200 cigarrettes into Thailand without paying duty. I don't smoke, I bring cigarrettes as gifts or extra tip on tip for exceptional service. Last trip brought in three cartons of Marlboro Red from US.
nokna, I gave up smoking when started coughing up my lungs.

when i'm in the UK i smoke roll-ups,ready made are just too expensive.
but as soon as i hit LOS,the Krong Thip are in my mouth as soon as possible.
and the rougher the better,but i used to cough my lungs up each and every morning on having the first one.
