I booked a flight with china airway because it had pretty much the only time I could leave, plus it was very inexpensive. I never heard of it before. I am now hearing from everyone that it has one of the oldest fleets and it it is a terrible airline in terms of service and safety of the planes. Is this true, I will feel horrible if I have to pay the cancelation fee on my ticket. Thanks

NeverbeentoBKK: Are you talkin' about China Airlines?? http://www.china-airlines.com/en/index.htm I have flown them plenty of times. Infact, I'm an emarld card member. I believe that China Airlines is the official airlines of the Taiwan government. Their so-called "older" planes are used for their short commute I believe. Besides, if you've flown in the U.S from say LA to LV or Palmsprings, you can not tell me those aircraft are brand-spakin' new!! ha ha ha!! If you are flying from the U.S, no worries. They use their newer aircraft during those legs. Besides, any airplane can go down. Look at the Concord!! And China Ailrlines is not the worst airline interms of deaths. I believe Smegma postes a link or states in one of the threads. So, don't worry about it. Get on the plane and think about Thailand.

On a side note. To my knowledge, China airlines at least buys their own new aircraft. I read on their site that they sold some of their older airplanes to Thai Airways two years ago. Go figure... huh??

I have been flying China Airlines every single trip to Thailand - they are inexpensive, but every plane I have been on has been newer and in good shape. Their service is very good, I have no complaints. Harry

Flown many times with china airlines from Holland, they are one of the few to fly direct from here and mostly the cheapest and they fly everyday. The old planes are flying inland in china. Always on time, tried KLM a few months ago three hour delay taking off from BKK more expensive as well, I had to take another day off work was not impressed.

Flown China Air 2wice so far without delays or overbookings and had seats all to myself goin over the Gulf of Alaska. The ladies were all sweet and the movies were plenty. They tend too ask lower rates $650 from SFO or LAX and also fly 2wice daily across the Pacific. Pretty much same ol same ol flights. Im with United now racking FF miles, but whew they delay flights all the time.

Since Thai changed their schedules I have flown China Airlines from Taiwan to Bangkok for the last 12 months. Economy Class is shite..unless you like tepid, mundane Taiwanese food but Business Class is on a par with all others. Safety? Not the best by all accounts but good enough for me - don't look at statistics..they tell you what you want to believe. I have flown CI about 20 times in the last year & never crashed yet, so they can't be that bad!!

These three happened to be together on the chart so here they are: Airline--------------------Rate--Flights--FLE*--Events--Last Cathay Pacific.............1.45...0.69M--1.00........1....1972 China Airlines (Taiwan)..7.16..0.90M--6.44......10....2002 EVA Air........................0.00...UNK---0.00........0-... *FLE - Full Loss Equivalent: This is the sum of the proportions of passengers killed for each fatal event. For example, 50 out of 100 passengers killed on a flight is an FLE of 0.50, 1 of 100 would be a FLE of 0.01. The fatal event rate for a set of fatal events is found by dividing the total FLE by the number of flights in millions. The URL is here: http://www.airsafe.com/events/regions/asia.htm
