I usually stay a month or so and tend to go all over by train, plane, boat. North, south. Still looking for that perfect bag. almost ready to give up on the wheels but they do come in handy. The best solution may be traditional carry-on bag with wheels and a large day pack for those 3-4 days trips to the island leaving the large bag at the hotel in Bangkok or wherever.

I like the Briggs and Riley carry-on (they have several models and they have nice big wheels and are well made) : http://www.briggs-riley.com/category.asp?subcat=42 I use it with their carry-on tote: http://www.briggs-riley.com/product.asp?pid=3 Using a strap included with the carry-on bag (above), the carry-on tote hangs from the back of the carry-on bag near the ground (the way flight crews hang their flight case onto their carry-on). This allows for perfect balance of both over the wheels, making it easy to pull. Or you can use the dual purpose back pocket of the tote that allows you to slide the bag over the One-Touch Outsider Handle System “for fast, convenient travel" on top of the carry-on bag handle. Lifetime unconditional warranty on their products.

JackRabbit present... My preference for carry-on is a leather back-pack. Thaimade, bought several years ago. Made out of "elephant-skin" and has large main compartment, two external sidepockets + two zippered lockers and a front pocket. Handy in all situations. JR

These are the top of the line: http://www.eaglecreek.com Unbelievably rugged and well designed. You'll pay (a lot) more for these, but if you travel a lot, they are worth it. Mine has over 1 million air miles to it, countless train, taxi, bus and boat trips, and has never ever broken a strap or zipper. EBay searches for "Eagle Creek" might yield lower prices than retail.

TUMI is good quality, but a bit overpriced IMO. Also, it is more likely to get ripped-off (the TUMI name is prominently displayed on their luggage). Something like Briggs & Riley (or some others) are of comparable quality, but more discreet.

Yep can't beat a good duffle and backpack for soft collapsable luggage to use while always roaming to places. Roller traditional and larger pieces are great for bulk clothes and gifts but need to be left in room. Eagle Creek is pretty tuff. Jansport is also. Still havent found a good medium traditional roller that can take the abuse. Now on my 5th set. Seems the zippers strip out and structures weaken over time. Costco and Pennys had some good deals. Samsonite and American Tourister need help.
