I'm thinging of taking the overnight sleeper from BKK to Koh Samui in December - train to Surat Thani then bus and ferry to Koh Samui. No 1st class sleepers, only 2nd - OK I know it takes ages but I thought it would be an experience.
Anyone tried it ? Comments

I've done it many times. The term 'sleeper' is a bit of a misnomer. Make sure you get a lower berth (it swings about less) and ear plugs are a good idea. If you're 6' or over forget stretching out. It's fun, you see bits of the countryside in the morning (it leaves Hua Lamphong at 6.20pm so you get a bit of a view of life by the tracks in Bangkok and then it goes dark) and everybody should try it once. You can smoke (either in the buffet car or between carriages), there's adequate cheap food from the hawkers who seem to get on and off at every stop and a woman comes around every ten minutes trying to sell you cold Chang (or water or Beer Singha). I always fly back though.

I have done it. ok, although tiring. try to get a 2nd class with fan, as aircon gets freezing cold at night.

I have done the sleeper thing, flying and special train for thai people. Of all three the thai special train was the best. Although it was a daytime thing the thai special was good and you got free food and soft drinks on the journey. The sleeper was the worst, the trains rattle badly, space is designed for thai's so if you over six two you dont fit the bunk - FLY, its cheap and quick

What does it cost, and how long does it take? What are the differences between 1st and 2nd class? I've taken many sleepers in Europe and always enjoyed the travel and slept quite well, despite being 6'3'' (except entering Berlin, when the older warped tracks made me dream of earthquakes).
Lisbon to Madrid, my 1st class compartment had private toilet, phone, and hot shower.

I think it's in the region of £8-9 so pretty damned cheap eh ?
There is no 1st class only 2nd and it leaves BKK at 18:30pm arriving on Koh Samui after a coach and ferry from Surat Thani at boput 10:30am.
Of course it's easier and quicker to FLY but I want to give it a go.
