I have a weekend booked in Chiang Mai in November. My thai girlfriend has told me now that she cannot travel due to sickness. I do have another friend that I can take with me however I am unsure as to how I can change the names on the tickets. The booking has been made on-line in my name with my credit card as leading passenger. Also does anyone know if there will be any additional cost. What I am trying to avoid is for the second girl to find out she is my second choice so all traces of my original travelling partner needs to be removed from the flight tickets and replaced with the new passengers name. I guess due to security that would have to be the case anyway. I have written to Thai Airways but as expected no response

You need to call them and see if the tickets are refundable. If not, then you may be stuck.

Err...I'm embarassed to admit that I've in the same situation before. I was slated to take someone with me, but she was terribly ill and could not accompany me. However, I did have a backup plan and decided to take someone else with me. All I did was to take the IC card of the "new" person and stopped by a Thai Airways office and had them change the name for. The lady behind the counter gave me a knowing look and just smiled. The old ticket was cancelled and a new ticket was issued with the new traveller's name. I was not charged at all for the change but I think that's because my tickets were for Business class.

Visit a Thai Airways office (not a travel agent) in Bangkok and ask them to change the name on the reservation. They might do it, they might not. It is not normal procedure for them to do so, but it *can* be done if they really want to - it's hit or miss. If you call on the phone and ask them to do it, they will likely say no. BarGirl Airlines (a.k.a. Air Asia) allows you to make name changes with a fee (500 baht, I think). It's too bad you can't just make airplane reservations with their description... like "dark haired girl with small breasts that has a tattoo". Then you could just go get another from the bar for the trip.
