Dubai is quite a nice airport. Nowhere near as good for duty free as it was in the nineties. Emirates have been very hit and miss lately so whether you have a good flight depends on your luck I reckon.

Just returned from LOS flying with Emirates BHX-DBX-BKK Rtn, in the last few years I have flown quite a lot with Emirates, and find them hard to beat, certainly better than BA, Quantus, SAS, EVA, CP, AF, LH, Kuwaiti & KLM on services and VFM. Singapore Air is rumoured to be the best but that would mean flying from LHR and doubling back to BKK. Thai Air was my other preferred but there pricing structure used to stink, very cheep if flying with tour operator/package deal but expensive for ticket only, so on my first few forays to LOS with package tour operator this was a very nice flight with friendly cabin crew good food and resemble comfort, I understand that since 9-11 the service may have dropped but there have been some cheep deals posted but I have not used them in recent years. My main points about flying Emirates are: - Emirates cabin crew have always been exceptional, polite and given good service, though this can differ between flights just depends on the crew. - Emirates fly’s from Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester & Glasgow each of them having a early afternoon flight to Dubai that connects to EK384 with a 3hr stopover, landing BKK noon the next day, returning EK385 (01:15hrs) again with a 3hr stopover in Dubai and connecting to flight to all respective UK airports landing noon the same day, (the 3hr stopover in DBX is a lot better that the 3hr drive to LHR). - Emirates pricing structure (booking direct) dose not have those annoying inflated holiday time price hikes. - Emirates frequent flyer card “SkyWards” shared with SriLankan, is the first FFC which has been of any real advantage, in the first year (Blue Card) I was able to use the extra baggage allowance for sports equipment. - Requiring only 25Kmiles to advance to silver & 50K to gold in any calendar year meant that two trips to LOS qualified me for silver, though they have just run a promotion this month where by tier miles were doubled so anybody who had registered could have qualified for silver with on trip this month. - The silver SkyWards card allows me to Check-in at the business desk, use the Business lounge at Dubai (very useful for the 3hr stopovers) and my baggage is off loaded first with the business class passengers baggage, plus I get 25% extra air miles. - Booking direct with Emirates online entitles me to another 75% extra air miles, with the extra 25% for my silver card I get double air mile, so my last 3 trips to LOS means next time I am flying free (except for the 64GBP (4000 THB) taxes that I have had to pay). Though Emirates pissed me off big time earlier on this year by cancelling an evening flight, meaning I had to travel mid day which cost me a day’s leave without any compensation I still rate them as my best option. BB P.S. just had a work college use Phuket Air LGW-BKK-LGW and an excursion to Karbi, he rates them as good, good food and extremely friendly Thai cabin crew. His complaints were the refuelling stops extending the flight to 16hrs and his return flight from Karbi to Bkk had been cancelled, so he had to get a later Thai Air flight.
