I'll first stay at PS soi 11 for a few days then plan on going to either phuket or samui. Is there a good agent in the area? Need to arrange flight and hotel. I might take a bkk girl with me, will she need to accompany me to the agent? any info would be appreciated.

Hi dude (same avatar, different guy) I found that all local travel agents I used are good. This is not saying much as I did not use many. But what I found is that you can find a substatial price diffence if you go out of your way. When I wanted to fly to Cambodia last year, I visited a dozen agents in the Suk. area. Prices were all around 10K Baht. with only thai companies to choose from. I then went to backpackers heaven Kao San Road and found that there you can get the same things for maybe half of the price. The agents don't look like much, most of the times they are just a desk in a tailorshop, but when you know what you want and don't need to be pampered, you can get it easily. A ticket there cost me only 5800 Baht. And you fly with a Cambodian airline, an option I could not find around Suk. So it means you have to think about what you want. Do you want it easy and luxurious and are able to pay for it, go to an agent around Suk. (or most anywhere). If you don't mind traveling all the way thru town, you can do with a star less and you want to spend your money on girls and not on luxury travel, then you have to go to Kao San Road. You have to go there anyway if you want to see more of BKK then just MBK. Oh, I dont think you need to know a specific agent in Kao San Road, because I think they all are working for only one or two different companies.

And I forgot to mention that most (plane) tickets take about 2 days to get proccessed. So go in on monday take your pick. Come back wednesday to collect your ticket and pay. And fly on thursday. This is not america were you can show up, pay for a ticket and take off in under an hour. Atleast not in my experience. Maybe it can go faster, but if you stick to this plan you are fairly safe.

My last trip to Thailand (sept '04) I just caught a cab to the airport and purchased a ticket on Thai Air to Phuket and then did the same thing from Krabi to Bangkok for the return trip. No advance purchase necessary. I prefer this method because I can be extremely flexible with my travel plans. Also, a cab-air conditioned minivan from Phuket to Krabi was only 200 baht. Hard to believe a 3 hour trip cost less than $5 US. I don't think it is necessary to use a travel agent since most tickets can be booked online at an internet cafe and picked up at the airport. LS

Thanks guys. So just showing up at the airport is doable. but I still need to book a hotel. since i'll be bringing my own bkk girl with me I don't need to worry about guest friendly. any suggestions on a high end resort in phuket or samui near the beach and nightlife? I'm thinking about either patong beach or chaweng beach. would a travel agent get me a better price? I think these place would charge more if I just showed up at the hotel.

You might get a better price if you book it at a travel agent instead of just going to the airport. Also, Air Asia and Bangkok Airways are always running promotions that are best booked online. I personally would not go to the airport without a reservation, but that is just me. The best travel agent I have found is on Soi 4, near the Rajah hotel (but on the other side of the street. It is called TTS (Thailand Travel Service). Susan runs the place, great service. Search this forum for "Susan" to find more specific info. The best travel agent I have found for International travel is Chawla Travel in Patpong. Don't get me wrong. I love phuket but getting from the airport to your hotel can be a bit of a hassle. If you are staying in Patong Beach it is quite the ride in a taxi. Not terribly expensive but certainly not cheap. The Taxi driver will stop 1/2 way to your destination at some check-in point. This is a little travel/tour place and they will try to help you out with hotel and tour things to do while in Phuket. I hate this little detour but it is hard to avoid. If at all possible make your hotel reservations prior to arrival in Phuket although I have shown up without a reservation and stayed the first night at one of the hotels the "check-in" place suggested. When you arrive if you love your hotel you can stay the entire trip and if not walk around a bit, pop in a few places, ask to see the room and negotiate with the front desk. This will usually get you in the place you want to stay. Negotiate rate and tell them no "guest charge". Get this in writing and avoid the hassle later. The first trip to Phuket the "check-in" place hotel was ok but not quite what I was looking for. Walked down the street to "Blue Ocean Resort" and loved the place. Right price and location. Manager said there would be a guest charge and I said Ill keep looking. Okay, okay...no guest charge. So, the next trip I stayed at Blue Ocean Resort and made the reservations in advance but a lot had changed within the year. The rooms had a "mildew" smell and just seemed run down. I toughed it out but would have moved if I had not been there for only two days. Another tidbit....most of the hotels have the insert for your key near the door to turn on the lights and run the AC. Remove the key and leave the thing in the wall panel to keep the AC running and this will keep your room cool during the day. A tip I learned from a longtime Thai traveller. LS
