I've got to fly BKK to Chicago return in early January and it seems the choice is between United and American. I'll be flying business class. Both are around the same flight time, both via Narita and both around same fare. I've never flown either before - does anyone know which is the better business class service? Loyalty programs don't matter. I'm a premium member in both Star Alliance and OneWorld so I'll get points for both.

Personally I think you'd be happier with AA. Considering it would be the triple 7 your on, American's business is slightly better in terms of comfort... not to mention the service a tad better but overall not much different. I have flown both, my preference would be AA but ultimately...'Up to You"

I've flown AA from Dallas to Narita on a 777 in coach and it was excellent. Personal TV, good legroom, and a headrest that bends to the shape of your dome. I've flown AA on a few other occassions and had no problems. I've flown United and it's the pits. Got stuck at Dulles for 5 hours past scheduled take off! No one offered a free meal, they could care less. I could have taken a cab into town and taken Amtrack and been in NY in less time than I spent waiting.

AA does not fly thru to BKK, they will codeshare usually with JAL from NRT-BKK. I prefer UA to AA any day of the week, I would think as a oneworld flyer you should attempt to get a routing that would allow you to codeshare with CX, which has a better biz class than both AA and UA IMO. Route the flight through LAX or SFO. That being said if you are flying UA and buying your biz ticket then I would suggest that you see if you can confirm an upgrade to F. Go on Ebay and buy a couple of SWU's for a couple of hundred bucks to upgrade your trip. I would take F anyday over biz. The market is more liquid more UA upgrades than AA upgrades. UA and AA are a toss up as far as loyalty benefits but UA belongs to a better Alliance, with more options and easier award redemption. Unless u are a top tier on either airline which is 1K or EXplat, then alliance benefits don't mean much since u will be flying in biz.
