I want to take a trip to the south soon. I am looking at Kho Samoi and Phuket for Phi Phi. I would like a more queit place with nice beaches and maybe good snorkeling. I am also not trying to break the bank. Does anyone have any good experiences in the south. Any recommendations on where to go or where to stay? Also, I might need to travel down there by myself and my girlfriend will come seperatly. Is it relatively safe to travel alone? Especially interested in advice on best place to go Thanks

There are many places to go in the south. Koh Samui (Koh Tao, Koh Phangnarn), Phuket (Koh Phi Phi or Koh Falang). If money is no object, try Krabi. More quiet than the other places, but on the expensive side. Or Langkawi (near Malaysia). So, even more choices... guess we didn't help much.

Talking about Phuket, people invariably seem to fly down. FrankieGirl and another TG went once by car, but they drowe through the night. For us Farangs, is the trip worth it by car or by train for the sake of the scenery etc? Anyone?

Scenery? None worthwhile mentioning. Plus there is no train to Phuket. You have to go either to Had Yai or Surat Thani and continue by road. You do save some money though.

I have driven down several times - it is a 9.5 hour drive. 2.5 hours to Cha-am (pretty dull) 4 hours to Surathani (good roads but very dull) 3 hours to Phuket (great drive, great scenery) So up to you. You might choose to fly to Phuket and drive up through the rain forest and stay at Takua Pah - rain forest and a monster lake.

Approx. 2,000THB for Thai Airways (walk-up) or as little as 1,000THB Thai Air Asia from BKK to HKT. Just take the plane and spend those hours you save on the beach or in a reef somewhere. I won't bitch about UTFSE because this site's search engine is junk, but in all honesty you can get this information from so many other sources that I'm curious why you thought to ask it here. Visit frommers.com for quick answers from their Thailand volume and consider saving this forum for questions that can't be answered so easily.
