Dear Brothers, In 3 weeks my friend and I arrive in BKK for our first two-week stay. We've gotten tremendous value out of this forum, and have downloaded 40 pages of your advice. Thanks for all the support from the veterans on this site. We'll definitely contribute some newbie FR's . Now for my basic newbie question, prompted by my hotel's exorbidant asking price for a limo pickup at the airport late Friday night, Jan 7 (TBHT2k). I was definitely prepared to pay 1k or 1100 just for the convenience upon arrival in a strange land, even though I know that it's far above the cost of a cab...but with the falling dollar 2k is steep, and there are many better things to spend that kind of money on in LOS! So, what are the current cab prices and protocols at BKK airport? I've read previous threads from 2003 and April of this year, and I have no problem paying a small surcharge at the arrivals hall for a hassle free ride. Do things still work the same way, and would it still cost around 300? Is the toll road still the best way to go? Thanks again, brothers, your help has been invaluable. Cheers, Luke

Where are you going Luke? Pattaya or just into Bkk? There's a limo service at the airport that has upped its charges to 700 baht one way but 20 or 30% discount if you do the return journey as well. There is a taxi service for 550 or 600 baht and that includes toll fees. For 2000 baht I'd want a couply of tasty BG's and an esky full of ice cold beer and be going to Pattaya.

Quote: from sanook269 on 2:38 am on Dec. 17, 2004 Directly outside of the arrival hall is a "official" taxi stand. Get in the queue and when you get to the booth they will ask you where you are going. If you are going into BKK it shouldn't cost you more than 300 Baht. The tip is up to you. It is a set rate. No rip offs. No side trips. Tell the driver to take the Skyway and give him 70 or 80 baht to pay the tolls.
The meter from the airport to Sukhumvit should be about 150-180, tolls are an additional 80 baht. Never ask a Bangkok taxi driver how much, 90% or the time, they will turn on the meter, if they do not, just tell them to turn on the meter. If they refuse (less than 1%), simply get out. Exceptions are taxis sitting in the Patpong area, they are mafia taxis who never will use the meter. But get a taxi moving on the road, get in and tell them where you want to go, if they do not turn on the meter, tell (not ask) them "use meter". If they don't, then have them stop and get out, the next taxi will use the meter. Check the taxi before you get out for your phone falling out of your pocket.

I posted this on another board If you are going to bangkok take a taxi from outside the terminal. After you come through customs and through the sliding door turn left put your head down and charge. Unless you already have some Thai money there are money changers immediately after you turn left, the exchange rate is ok so change as much as you need to pay for hotel and taxi, and even maybe the first couple of days, make sure you get some small notes (100's). Forget all the Limo/taxi offices and go straight through the meet and greeters and the touts that ask if you want a taxi/limo. You will see the terminal exit door on the right, go through and turn right, at the bottom of the barriered ramp you will see an office/hut. Tell the nice lady, who speaks good english, which hotel you are staying at and she will give you two tickets. The next taxi in line will come and take your ticket and cases and off you go. The tickets are in case you have a problem with the taxi driver and you can complain. I am told by my gf that drivers do sometimes loose their licence. Tell the driver to take the express way and give him 100 Baht, for the express way charges, you will get some change. When you get to your hotel pay the meter + 50 Baht, (fee the airport charges to the taxi) + tip (10/20 Baht). Total taxi fare 200 - 300 Baht, depending where your hotel is. REMEMBER to keep your boarding pass handy as from some flights you will be asked to show it as you leave the gate. If you are going somewhere else than Bangkok the proceedure is the same but there are some interesting alternatives.

Just too add... noticed on my last visit the prices of the so called limos have taken a big price hike, also there are 2 or 3 new ATM’s just past the meter and greeters on the left as you exit. BB

BKK taxi's are simple, easy, and cheap to use even for backpackin' newbies who might have never set foot outside of their own country. The brothers have already knocked this post out of the park, but I'll mop up and condense it. -> Make sure you have some baht on hand -> 100THB bills or smaller are best -> Don't listen to any touts and proceed to the taxi stand outside -> People might come up to you while you're in line, ignore them -> Tell the English speaking taxi stand girl your hotel's name -> She will give you or the driver a sheet of paper -> Part of this service is a 50B airport arrival charge *** A second option is to walk up to departures (save 50B) *** Remember to tell the driver to use the meter (point at it if necessary) and you'll be okay. -> Tollway charges average around 70B (40+30) -> The tollway is highly recommended, esp. during weekdays -> The tollway is also a great way to break a 1000B bill -> ColoradoGuy's comment about checking the taxi before you leave is very useful advice for newbies. -> Don't let the honking traffic at your destination distract you from getting your stuff before you leave. -> Don't forget to check your favorite guide book (or frommers.com) for simple, easy to answer questions just like this.

IMO it is a bad idea to have someone pick you up at the airport. You have to worry about finding the person and/or they have to worry about finding you. This can be a nightmare, especially if your plane is late. Better to just get a regular cab outside. If you want to splurge, get a limo (really just a slightly larger taxi) inside from one of the touts for about 700 baht. Otherwise, go outside (ignore the offers for "taxi" inside the terminal) and go to taxi booth. The woman in the booth will ask you were you want to go and write it down for the taxi driver to understand. She will also give you a card that tells you the taxi cab number in case there is a problem. Never pay the taxi fare until you get out of the cab and retrieve you luggage (this applies to any taxi anywhere in the world). As others have mentioned, if the meter is not running, just tell the cab driver "meter".

That nice Mr Thaksin has said that all the tolls in Bangkok are going to be a flat rate of 20B. So that may happen sometime...or not. (It might be because there's an election coming up.)
