I will be in LOS at the end of March, I was wondering if any of you have traveled by train from Bangkok to Phuket, or from Bangkok to Chang Mai? If so, how long does it take and what does it cost?

Took the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in November. All night train ride. I got a first class sleeper for about 1,500 baht. Make your resevations when first arrive in LOS for first class sleeper, they fill up fast! Liked it and will do it again. You get a little cabin with wash basin, couch type seat that makes into upper & lower bunk. Also, air conditioned. This also basicly one nights logding and transportation.

There is no train to Phuket from bangkok...nearest would probably be the station near Surat Thani that's name escapes me.....Then it's a 3/4/5 hour bus trip...depending on type of bus.....which kinda defeats the point of travelling in a relaxed manner. Certainly the train to Chiang Mai is a nice relaxing way to go....but I haven't done it in a long time....the Tarin Authority of Thailand has a website here...no it doesn't...couldn't find it....but here are two sites with good info http://www.asia-discovery.com/train.htm http://www.thaifocus.com/travel/train/timenorth.htm enjoy

2 weeks ago I took the first class sleeper route Bangkok/Surat Thani. First class sleeper fare was about 1100B and second class sleeper was 650B I think. I'd recommend the first class as the extra 500B is money well spent i.e. much larger bed, private, air cond. Then from Surat Thani to Phuket takes about 4 hours by bus. Don't know fare. This ends up being a rather time consuming journey but can be a welcome change to flying. If one has limited time then I reckon flying is the way to go. Flying to Phuket compared to train/bus probably only costs an extra 1500B each way, and you save a shit load of travelling time.
