Is there any information available about the state of the roads and railways in southern Thailand? Is it possible to travel overland into Malaysia or would flying be a better option now?

Train:
Let's make a guess:
Most of the trip in Thailand follows the East Coast. So shouldn't too much of a problem.
The train trip in Malaysia, however, goes on the West Coast. You might find trouble there.
Bus
Thailand, again no problem, I guess.
Malaysia, not quite sure if there are bus services. Probably indirect (which take you a long time). Most regular bus services follow also the west coast route.

Fly, currently lots of very cheap flights on the traditional carriers (Sing & Thai) plus the new discount ones (Valuair & Air Asia). Air Asia tickets from 2,800 Baht return on there website.
