For those who don't know what MRTC was, it was the "More Room Throughout Coach" product enhancement that AA carried over from TWA after the buyout. Originally this was a fleet-wide upgrade that gave passengers between 33 and 35 inches of seat pitch in coach depending on the aircraft and seat location. This was among the best you could find on any major carrier.
Then the 757 and A300's had MRTC removed. American stated that these flights were only going to be scheduled for low-yield city pairs. Now it sounds like even the International Flagship 777 service is loosing MRTC during heavy maintenance checks.
If true, AA has just helped convince me that I need to change preferred carriers pronto. I have flown AA 777's trans-pacific and trans-atlantic and even though the FA service was horrible I still really enjoyed the extra room on those long flights. Now, there will be virtually nothing to appreciate on AA.

Start flying United and when you fly more then 25K in a year you can book premier economy where you get up to 5" more.

Good point, BigDUSA. Here's how everything adds up in my head so far...
Reasons to fly United to LOS...
-> Competitive AP fares ex TX
-> Eco+ for elites
-> No interlining required for BKK
-> NRT T1
-> FF w/ 100% Disc. Eco Accural
-> Booze in Eco comp. (still ?)
-> CH9 ATC
Reasons not to fly United to LOS...
-> Long-haul RJ's
-> Potential financial issues
-> First 25K are in 31" pitch
-> Typical US-class FA service
-> No PTV on 744
-> Redemption below AA levels
-> Possible strike action (UA FA's)
Right now I'm thinking Asiana (34"), Malaysia (34"), JAL (33"), Thai (34"), Eva (33") or even Cathay (32"), but if the UA fare can undercut the rest by 10% or more then they just might sway me.

I'm not sure about JAL having a 33" pitch, but remember that pitch is not the same thing as legroom and has nothing to do with seat width. Even though I have flown JAL five times myself, I have never sat in anything other than the exit row. How cool is that?
Update on the MRTC situation: Last I read, AA are getting rid of MRTC across the board, including the 777. However, they are apparently not adding all of the seats back in, but instead just one more row on the 777. Not sure how much of this is true just yet, but if you look at aa.com you'll notice that MRTC is nowhere to be found. At least, I couldn't find it.
Edited in response to sanook269: Yes, you're right about pitch and I agree that it's the closest thing we have to an actual legroom standard. I'm just saying that you could still have 33" pitch and horrible leg room.
Both NW and UA claim to have 31" pitch, but I feel like I get more room in UA regardless. Next time I fly JAL I'll be extra careful to check-in early enough to make sure I get the exit row again. From the sounds of it I'll be in hell if I ever get shut-out.

Pitch is the distance from the back of your seat (the front of the back of your seat) to the back of the seat in front of you. That is the best indication of "leg room" that I can think of given the information provided by the airlines.

another reason to fly UA; they are part of Star Alliance which includes TG,ANA,SQ and OZ (Asiana), this means that you will get 100% EQM accrual and you can redeem your award tickets on any staralliance carrier, capacity permitting.
BTW E+ is not for elites only it is available space permitting to all UA customers, Elites just have first shot at reserving an E+ seat prior to check in.
