Just returned from LOS and cleared US Customs in Seattle. I was waived through without any inspection. I have never been inspected in LAX or SFO either when clearing customs there. A quick glance over to the people whose bags were being searched indicated that they were very poorly dressed and could have used a haircut. Something to consider when returning from LOS, especially if you purchased software or music CD's, or DVD's.

Mr. Alan: It looks like we were in LOS at the same time. I also just returned via NW to Seattle, however my return in customs was different. I was well dressed in a suit that I had bought in Thailand, neat, clean, but was checked by customs well past when the last person from the plane had cleared. Interesting enough, they were not the least bit interested in my luggage but wanted to go through the papers in my briefcase. Every single one, paper by paper they read, and I had alot of material to check. There was nothing incriminating for them to find but they sure found out alot about my medical business and why a travel and who I see. Certainly irritating but just a consequence of international travel I guess. PS: what do you think about that 6:00AM flight at BKK? I have never gotten used to leaving for the airport at 3:30AM. It a bad start to a week of adjusting to the jet lag.

I guess if you travel to LOS on business a lot, they may be looking for something different. My advice is more applicable to tourists who may be carrying items with them. One interesting thing mentioned in the famous book “Dress for Success” by John Malloy, is that someone who wears silk shirts to work is not likely to get a raise from their boss. The idea is that if you wear silk shirts, maybe you have more money than you should. I think someone wearing a custom tailored suit on a long-haul international flight is a bit conspicuous. Maybe you should try to blend-in next time. I flew EVA. Left BKK at 12:35 in the afternoon, connected in Taiwan, and arrived in Seattle at 14:40 on the same date. Connected in Seattle to another domestic flight to reach my final destination. Very long day.

Just an aside, I've entered Amereka from Thailand via LAX, SFO, SEA, PDX, DFW, ORD and SJC. Seattle has, by far, the most inquisitive customs staff. Everywhere else, I am almost always waived thru with a smile, in Seattle, I am ALWAYS asked questions. My bags are not always searched. Something to keep in mind.

Mr. Alan: Interesting theory on the silk shirts and customs. And yes I did stand out wearing the suit. Wouldn't have done it but my suitcase was so full, couldn't get it in. I can imagine you had a long day if you had another flight after reaching the west coast. I am exhausted after just getting to Seattle. A friend lives in Alaska and when he returns from BKK, he stays the night in an airport hotel in seattle. Good hotels at the hotel are really cheap when you get them thru priceline. I got back sunday, this is thursday, and I still wake up at 2:00AM wide awake. Love LOS but hate the airtravel and affects on the body!

There is no physical "profile" that will single you out for a customs search. If you are a (younger) male traveling from SEA (alone is the worst) into North America you are a potential drug smuggler. It does not matter how you are dressed, or if you need a shave or haircut. This came directly from the mouth of a couple of customs agents a few years ago.

I used to like to fly Korea Air with their 12 hours layover in Seoul (coming from LAX or SFO). There is a nice transit hotel in the Seoul terminal and is only about $55 for 8 hours. The long layover made the trip last longer, but not as tiring and I could take a shower in the hotel. Also, free internet terminals in the Seoul airport. Downside was that Korean Air airplane seats are hard as a rock. Had to put the blanket under my ass after about 4 hours. With EVA I was able to fly Evergreen Deluxe Class (on the SEA - TPE legs) for about $1,500. I couldn’t afford to fly business class on any other airline.

...China, Japan, Philippines... You are so right about that, I have been in the customs area in Vancouver airport a number of times when I was the only white guy in there and probably the only one who spoke any english. Sometimes it seems like the hardest country in the world to enter is your own, in my case, Canada. Give them a gun and badge and they think they can play god.

Has anyone had customs check or confiscate DVD's or software when returning to the U.S.? I always carry a little CD book which is empty on the flight over and fill it up with movies and software titles on the way back. Sometimes I actually just store the software on the laptop or install it while in Thailand. I DO NOT carry those incriminating little plastic sleeves which scream "I'm not legal" on the plane with me. Well, I did that once or twice but not anymore. Since I have my laptop with me I "hope" they just assume I'm returning with movies I've purchased or own to watch on the trip. Any thoughts. Never been hassled at customs but I think this might just be because the Atlanta airport is always busting at the seams and the odds are low they even see you to single out. LS
