BKK is well known for its horrendous traffic even by 21st century standards. What times of day do the members consider that travel is best avoided unless absolutely necessary?
I would hope to make this my rest period daily hopefully with relaxing company. Ý Ý

Seriously, traffic is bad by 21st century standards, in my opinion from 10am - 10pm at night. But .. the worse is probably during normal rush hour hours in the evening. Say .... 3pm-7pm.
But .. again, depends on the area. I am talking about the Sukhumvit Area.
But ... traffic always sucks in asia at any time!!! ha ha ha ha!!

avoid rush hours
6-9 in the am easy to avoid ;-0
4-9 pm .. not as easy to avoid ..
use BTS as much as possible .. or walk, if you don't walk too fast then you won't get so hot.. also, make use of the many 7-11's and go in, cool down and have something to drink.

But ... when I am stuck in traffic, I enjoy watching all the nice scenery walk by in skirts, high heels and tight tops. Makes the time pass by quicker!! ha ha ha ha!!

breathless, the trick is simple. Figure out the places you will be visiting most, and get a hotel within walking distance if possible so that you do not have to bother with the traffic at all. Use the BTS as much as possible.

7:30 AM to 9:30 AM M-F
4:30 PM to 8:00 PM M-F
Things can get hairy inbound from upcountry on Sunday nights, or in the evening of last day of a long weekend or other official holiday for same reason = the outflow to the countryside is returning.
New Year, Loi Kratong, Songkran = Bangkok streets are almost deserted, you could almost film an End of the World movie at those times.
But for purposes of this board the bad news is that almost all the BGs piss off upcountry too so it's a good time to get pissed but a bad time to get laid.
BTW, Bangkok traffic is far from the worst in the world. If you use taxis, mostl of the aggro will be the drivers'.
Bangkok traffic is about like Washington DC without the HOV lanes or the subway. A definite rush hour, and congestion in certain areas almost all the time, but, it's mostly something to piss and moan about.
If you want traffic try Lagos, Cairo, Tokyo, New York City, all of which are much worse than Bkk and will cost you a helluva lot more to get around in. In the case of Lagos, maybe your life!!

Thanks for the information guys. My ambition is to do very little walking and use the Sky Train as much as possible.
Location wise GP appears to be fairly central to everything. Sounds like afternoon will be a good time to lie down and contemplate my navel

Further to the information given by ABC and Oaktoad on the peak hours I must confess that since the skytrain came into operation, it was a blessing to have such a pleasant way of transportation. I use the 30-day/trip pass (B/.540) Ýevery two weeks as this is the best choice to avoid traffic stuff. For long time I've been feeling pitty for those guys on the ground having HOURS sitting in front of the bloody steering wheel....
However, going to work in the morning is a nightmare. The only relax time is when holidays for the schools arrive!!!! Only then we can see the flow of cars moving a bit fast. Sometimes I pay B/.55/trip and others B/.110 for the same stupid distance. That's Bangkok....
