Quick Question: Looking to book flights for May/June. Looked at the price from Chicago:Bangkok:$1097. Went last year in Nov/Dec and paid 800... What's the best time to book for that for the cheapest rate. I have the most FF mileage with UA but am willing to look elsewhere for cheaper tickets. May 28 - Jun 12th... ThankS!

Thanks for the link. I was getting ready to book for May and about given up on Unted and was going with China. Now looks like I will go back to United. There FF program has been good to me.

aircrest: I have already booked UA from ORD using bt-store.com. It was $900. I have not yet paid it but I must within 48 hours. Last time in Dec/Jan, I paid $768. Is there any chance it will go down if I wait, or should pay now and end my search forever?

Check out Delta/Korean and Northwest. They are usually the cheapest and start at $800, at least during November to April.

If you travel Monday - Thursday you can save a $100 or so. Now that NW is flying the smaller plane from Narita to BKK the prices are around $1400 to get to BKK. Maybe they will run a special in the future but for now United and Delt/Korean are the cheapest from the Midwest/Southeast as far as I can see.

The problem with flying UA in May or June is that (I assume) you will connect in Japan and that is a busy time for travel to and from the US. Spring and Summer are peak times for USA - Japan travel. It is hard to say if prices will change. Each flight has many different fares offered, and each fare has a limited number of seats allocated. On some flights, the cheap fares are already taken (or have not been released yet). The airlines usually wait until they know a particular flight is under-booked (based on past history) before the start offering additional highly discounted seats. The airlines have Yield Management computer systems that automatically monitor bookings and adjust the prices.

That makes sense. In December I was checking UA rates for LAX-BKK trip in Feb and getting fares in the high $900's, then I got a fare in January for the same Feb trip for $755. Other times I have not seen rates fall. BTW, UA is also currently running a double milage promotion for Tuesday and Wednesday travel to/from US-Asia.
