I recently flew to Singapore via Bangkok and back to London Heathrow with Thai air. I usually fly emirates to BKK but decided to give Thai air a go as they had managed to get number 4 in the skytrax 2004 awards. I also decided to join thai air royal orhid plus club seeing as I would be travelling some distance. I checked in and presented my royal orchid membership card and began my journey. My flight out of heathrow didnt start well with an hour delay. Once on the plane and in the air I was welcomed to Thai air with an early songkran celebration when the air steward accidentally tipped a whole tray of water and nam som over me. No apology at all was given for this. My clothes and shoes were ruined for the remainder of my journey. Menus were handed out and a delightful choice of two meals were given. My turn came to choose and I made my selection only to find that they had none of my selection left. I settled for the poorer alternate choice. The film then started....and then stopped...and then started...and then stopped again and then started..with a ten minute skip on...and then stopped (u get the picture?). I gave up on the film and decided to listen to some music. I changed to channel to audio and the next thing is my thai air headphones gave up on me. The lights were dimmed due to it being a night flight so I decided to get out my crossword book (yes I do crosswords to pass the time!). I pressed the light button and voila.....no light....evidently the bulb had gone. Not a great start to my multi legged journey! I arrived in Bangkok an hour later than scheduled and rushed around the departure lounge frantically looking for which gate my Singapore connecting flight would leave from. The departure tv screens were displaying the wrong departure gate so I went to the thai transfer check in desk to ask..only to be told that they didnt deal with international transfers. By luck I spotted my departure gate only to find that the onward flight to Singapore had been delayed by an hour. Arghhhhh! I arrived in Singapore 3 hours late with my nam som stained clothes. I wont bore you with the return journey details to heathrow as they involved further delays and a broked seat! On arriving back home I eagerly entered my details into the online royal orchid membership area to see how many miles I had accumulated in the hope of getting some sort of benefit from my travels. My points remained at 0. I contacted royal orchid to ask why my points hadnt been added..only to be told that the check in staff would only put my points on my membership if I presented my card at check in (which I had done!). I was told that the only way they would give me my points would be for me to send the boarding passes along with my tickets and a letter from my travel agent showing each leg of my travel (which I had long thrown away) to their Bangkok head office. Am I just intolerant of bad customer service or is this just just not good enough?

P24 that sucks. Thai air is one of the pricier carriers too. I would be unnerved also to pay a premium price for poor service. From my travels with the military on aircraft with no windows, no heat and noise so loud you have to wear earplugs the whole trip, I learned to be self sufficient when flying. An Mp3 player, magazines, bottled water and a sandwhich were the minimum carry on items. The fact is airline service is always lacking in some annoying way no matter how much you pay.....Fly cheap, save money for the destination. Better luck next time.

Sounds like you had bad luck alright. My brother-in-law swears by Emirates...and he is a regular international flyer and flown with most of the major carriers. The one hour delay may or may not have been a Thai air problem, so unless you know it was a plane fault, hard to blame them on that one. Same with being an hour late....they probably couldn't make up time without a tail wind. The spilling of an entire tray of liquid on you and no apology??? Did you ask to speak to the head steward?? If the seat was also wet I would ask for another seat and if need be one in business. Same also for the broken seat on the way back. If you don't speak up or make a point about something, the staff will usually not offer anything as they won't believe there is a problem (advice from someone who works in an airline). For example the spilt drinks would go along the lines of: You: I understand it was an accident but you need to find me another seat Thai: We have no other seats available You: You must have at least one in Business, surely you don't expect me to sit in a wet seat after having all that spilt on me. Thai: Sorry but no seats are available You: OK, I want you to sign an incident report stating what has happen and I'll be seeking a refund. Of course, go overboard and there will probably be a security team waiting for you when they land 55555 I've flown thai once (business class) and flight over no problems, flight back some minor annoyances. Asked for there personal dvd players to watch movie, was told one would be brought after take off but never arrived. Asked again and girl just disappeared - after that I just thought f*** it I'll go to sleep. Was eating a meal and near the end but not finished and girl must of been in "auto mode" and said "Take you plate away sir" (or whatever they say) and it was gone before I said no. When she asked me if I wanted to drink told her I hadn't finished eating and she apoligised but I said "mai ben rai" but she brought an entire new meal back to me. I'm also in the Orchid Club, but fly Singapore now (both are in the Star Alliance) as I find that their inflight entertainment makes the flight go a whole lot quicker even though I have a 2 hour stop over. With Thai and mileage points I had same problem, I got credited for economy fare mileage rather than business (125%). The rubbish you have to go through to prove you were on the flight is bullshit. Their own records would be able to verify whether you we on the flight or not. Same happened on my last trip with Singapore. Got credited for 3 out of the four legs. When I spoke to Thai and said, well how did I get back from Bangkok to Singapore if I didn't fly - I got the sorry but you need you original boarding pass stub and ticket etc etc. The trick with the mileage is to make sure your agent lists your number when they book the ticket and also check again at checkin at the airport and make them read it out or look on the screen itself rather than them nodding their head that they have it. If thai asked me two things that they could do to improve, it would be: 1. Inflight personal entertainment like Singapore; 2. Ability for internal investigation of travel for mileage.

You make some good points Isee. We werent told the cause for the delay leaving heathrow but were told the reason for the delay out of bangkok was due to the pilots being delayed outside the airport because of traffic jams. I complained about the drinks spill and literally emptied my shoe of orange juice in front of the head stewards face. I asked for a seat change but was told that all seats were full including business class! I was worried about going overboard for the security issues you mentioned. With regards to the royal orchid. I mentioned my member number on booking and at all check ins I presented my card to the staff. I too would have thought that Thai air would have some other way of having me on their records as flying with them apart from me having to post them documentary evidence. Maybe they have a difficult air mile record system to prevent passengers receiving the points they deserve. I did write to thai air UK and Bangkok customer servcice offices to explain to them my bad experiences but I received a very mild apology with a message stating that they are constantly trying to improve their services and will take my comments into consideration. Unfortunately it looks like its back to flying with emirates or BA for me.

I've flown Thai a few times with no problem. FA on United dumped a drink on me. She gave me a bottle of Champagne when I got off the plane. Broken seat, I would have had them change me. Upgrade to business if necessary.

Power, i've been flying thai for 3 years now at 50,000 miles a year got gold card and have been upgraded on many times to club class. there was once not long ago when I phoned the head office to book the ticket was told to collect at airport, on arriving I saw the e ticket machines for people with no check in luggage, the machine gave me a piece of paper. the flight left at 18.30 I went through customs at 18.15 at the gate I was told I need a boarding pass, uh. The thai air lady told me this was all I needed, after a mad dash here and there got on the plane. I complained to thai air with this is how you treat your frequent flyers, and was rewarded with 10, 000 miles. all in all I like thai air, however complain and you might get somewhere, don't and you won't.

service with klm / air france was just a horror: - I was changed from a flight to another without being notified - cued for about 3 hours - they lost my luggage - I was not booked on the connecting flight, which meant I spent 3 more hours waiting for the next connection. i will never ever give them business again. bux

Oh dear...and I thought I had a bad time of it. I guess all airlines have their faults. Its just a shame that this was my first experience with thai air international.
