Thinking of spending some time up in the North on my next trip, am taking overnight train to Chiang Mai and staying around there for about 5 or 6 days.
I know I could fly up to Chiang Rai but I like to spend time getting around like the locals do
Anyone know how long the bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai takes ?

I read on a tourist site that it can take 4-6 hours which I thought highly unlikely UNLESS it diverts off the main road to lots of small villages.

It's 90-120 minutes. Good road but a few places you can get caught behind traffic. There are numerous tourist buses using this road and another that runs to the north and west (of Chiang Rai) that can well take 4-6 hours by diverting into hot spring resorts, rest stops, villages, etc. Overall it's a nice drive.

I would have thought that 120 minutes would be more likely. It is quite a winding road after leaving Chiang Mai and delays due to slow moving traffic ahead are almost inevitable. Depending on the time of year you will also probably want to stop for a drink on the way.
It took me and my gf almost 2.5 hours when making this journey in Jan.

i just read Yu Hua's to live. its about a chinese man's life progressing through the cultural revolution. Point being he starts of life very wealthy, before the gambling, and rides around town on the back of a fat chinese prostitute. how bout that?

It takes between 3 and 4 hours by bus. It is a very scary drive, because the bus goes over a mountain pass. The last time I did it I was pleased to arrive in Chiang Mai and promised myself never to use this kind of tranportation again. More expensive is a private car, but you have to instruct the driver to use the low gear whilst decending, because they prefer to put the gear in 0, in order to safe gazoline.
